Struggling Chilwell Could Leave Chelsea to Find Form Again

Ben Chilwell used to be one of the players that everyone would talk about after watching a Premier League match. He would do the right things, make great passes, defend hard for his team, and run all over the pitch. He was a huge name in the Premier League, showing why he was a consistent starter for Chelsea FC in London.

However, times have changed for the Blues, as numerous players are either leaving, no longer training with the first team, or being pushed out of the squad unexpectedly. Chilwell is one of the players who is unable to find his form — and as a result, he is struggling for playing time, good training quality, and attention from the manager.

Chilwell Could Leave Chelsea Soon

Ben Chilwell could leave Chelsea extremely soon if he continues to play as he is doing right now. He is struggling to play well, train well, or even get the attention of the new manager, Maresca, to give him a chance to show what he can do on the field. With the first game of the new 2024-2025 Premier League season less than one week away, it seems as if this would be the best time for the player to leave and go elsewhere.

However, Chilwell’s contract doesn’t end for another three seasons. This means that he is all but stuck at the London side, unless another team can strike up a wonderful deal that could see him go out on loan or get out of his contract early.

It is shocking that he is getting as little playing time as he is at Chelsea. Chilwell isn’t a young player or one that is past his prime — he is 27 years old, which is right around the prime age for footballers, and has made more than 100 appearances for the club during his time there. Prior to Chelsea, he made a staggering 99 appearances for Leicester City between 2015 and 2020. He has also been capped multiple times for the English international team, showing his prowess on the football pitch.

But, ever since Cucurella arrived at Chelsea, a member of the Spanish national team, he has slotted into the back line. Chilwell has fallen out of favor with the coaching staff and has let the pressure get to him. Plus, his injury last year set him back from even being able to compete with Cucurella for the last defender’s spot in the Chelsea back line.

Maresca Speaks Out

For the Chelsea gaffer, it is also a form issue. Chilwell might not be better than Cucurella in terms of who should start in that position, but he has also been unable to show his best during pre-season heading to the new season.

Chilly has not been training for the last few days because he has been ill, Maresca told reporters. It’s quite clear, I love the way he is but the problem is that he struggles with us a little bit to find his best position. This morning we had 22 players training, and if you ask all of them they will say they want to play against City on Sunday but that is impossible.

It seems as if the competition, injuries, sickness, and low confidence are all reasons that Chilwell could find himself leaving Chelsea before the season has even begun.
