Chelsea have had to deal with a headache they never saw coming after the club needed to discipline a key player for their squad this upcoming season. Enzo, one of the London team’s most critical players, has taken to social media to not only embarrass himself but also embarrass his club and country. Now, Chelsea is left to pick up the pieces.
It goes without saying that professional athletes should be careful what they post online. But when they post something that is offensive and discriminatory, the club must take matters into their own hands to discipline the player and show accountability for their actions. In this case, Enzo is the culprit.
Enzo Posts Discriminatory Social Media Video on Instagram
Chelsea have released a club statement regarding Enzo’s social media post online, where he used Instagram to sing a racist song about French players in the Euros and their African ancestry. Not only is this racist, discriminatory, and offensive, but it is also rude to many players in the Premier League — the league that he currently plays in.
The midfielder, who is not of English descent but is from Argentina, is also an expat in the country where he currently plays. Therefore, it is of very poor form that he is making fun of other expats and immigrants who are living in countries other than where they were born. Many players in the Premier League are from other countries across the world, so posting a discriminatory video is not only insensitive, but it is ironic.
Chelsea now has to pick up the pieces left behind by Enzo’s poor Instagram post.
“Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behavior completely unacceptable. We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive club where people from all cultures, communities and identities feel welcome. We acknowledge and appreciate our player’s public apology and will use this as an opportunity to educate. The Club has instigated an internal disciplinary procedure.”
Chelsea Are Not the Only Ones Issuing an Apology
After Chelsea issued a formal apology online regarding Enzo’s tasteless Instagram post, the player took to social media — again — to issue an apology late on Tuesday evening. He stated that he stands up against discrimination and that the things said in the video do not reflect his beliefs or character. This could be him covering himself to avoid any more punishment, or he could truly be remorseful for his actions — we may never know what his intentions are.
The only thing we can be sure of is that this is the last thing the club needs before the start of the new season when they want to start fresh and leave negativity in the past. They had a fair prior season in the Premier League, finishing in sixth, which is way off the mark for a club of their stature. Now, going forward into the 2024-2025 campaign, they will hope to have a more united team — something that could be difficult considering the post that Enzo put on his Instagram.
Last year, Enzo Fernandez played in 28 matches for Chelsea, he scored three goals and provided two assists for his teammates. He was a consistent player for the team and he helped them earn the top-six finish in the Premier League. He was also featured in seven EFL Cup games and four UEFA Champions League matches for his club.
