Renato Viega is Now a Chelsea Player: Deal Closed For €14m

Chelsea has signed a deal for a promising young player who is hopefully going to help the Blues finish much better than their sixth-place spot last season in the Premier League. Pochettino and his team struggled last season with form and consistency, showing in their ending result on the ladder of finishing outside of the top five in the English league.

Now, they hope to bolster their squad during the summer transfer window to see if they can rejuvenate the team, acquire more backup players to be on the substitutions bench, and purchase big-name stars who can come in, score goals, and help the team play better.

One of the players who they recently purchased is a talented defender from the Swiss league, a stalwart defender who will help the team keep clean sheets this season.

Chelsea FC have acquired Renato Veiga from Basel in the Swiss League, showing a promising start to their summer transfer window deals. The 20-year-old might only be young, but he has seriously impressed in the senior team for Basel over the last couple of seasons, showing that he can be a consistent, reliable, and driving force in the back line at such a young age.

Plus, it is a great deal for Chelsea. They are used to spending more than $50 million on a transfer coming into the team. In this case, Veiga is just $12 million, which is an absolute bargain for a club with the finances that Chelsea has to spend in the off-season. This long-term contract keeps Veiga at the club for a whopping eight years, one of the longest deals that the Prem has ever done.

So, who is Veiga and why is Chelsea so keen to have him at Stamford Bridge? The 20-year-old is a young defender who shows a lot of promise. The Portuguese player began his youth career at Sporting CP and Real S.C., training with both teams from 2010 until 2022. Then, he moved his way up into the Sporting CP B team, where he made 31 appearances and scored four goals as a defender.

He also gained experience on a loan spell in 2023 at FC Augsburg, where he made 13 appearances for the club. Then, after impressing at Sporting, he moved to FC Basel last season where he played in 23 matches and scored two goals. He has also made numerous appearances for the Portuguese youth squads throughout his career.

Chelsea Looking Forward

Now, Chelsea FC has a lot to look forward to heading into the 2024-2025 season. Todd Boehly, the new American owner, has decided to make a huge change at Stamford Bridge to bring in new talent and encourage youth to join the squad. The club has signed numerous younger players to give a much-needed energy boost, including Estevao Willian and Marc Guiu.

Veiga isn’t the first player Chelsea have signed in the off-season — they have been busy signing Guiu, Dewsbury-Hall, Adarabioyo, and many other promising players who will hope to break into the starting eleven next campaign.

Veiga said goodbye to his old club and expressed gratitude for his new adventure in a social media post just the other day.

This past season, we didn’t achieve anywhere near the goals that a club of the dimensions of Basel demands. But I’m sure that with the new crew on board and with your support behind, that you will bring Basil back to where it truly belongs. You gained one more supporter, cheering for your success. Thanks Basel.
