Chelsea had their sights set on a new player who would certainly bolster their ranks heading into the new 2024-2025 Premier League campaign. However, the Blues suffered a blow before the season event kicked off as their transfer target decided to stay put at his current club – and does so for at least four more years, meaning Chelse might not ever get the chance to sign this young star.
Chelsea had been looking to poach one of the top players from Villareal this past week, but that all came crashing down just one day ago as the Spanish club made it known they were keeping him for four more years.
Danish Goalkeeper to Stay at Villareal
Filip Jorgensen, one of the best keepers in the footballing world and a Danish wonderkid, has decided to stay at Villareal in Spain instead of going to the English Premier League club, Chelsea. The young Dane was one of the Blues’ top targets heading into the new year, which means they could have secured yet another shot-stopper who would help them keep clean sheets and add more security.
Now, they have to set their sights elsewhere as Jorgensen has decided to stay put in Villareal instead of going to Enzo Maresca’s team. Pochettino recently gave up his coaching role at Chelsea, seeing Maresca step in to become the gaffer and try to bring in young players who can help the team succeed this season.
But, Jorgensen won’t be one of those young and fresh faces. Jorgensen decided to renew his contract with the Spanish Club until at least 2029, according to Villareal’s social media pages and website.
Why did Chelsea want Jorgensen so badly? He not only is a young player who has numerous years ahead of him, but he also had the most saves in the league after playing a total of more than 35 matches for this club this past year. He is the perfect example for young players that following through an academy system can land you a high-level team with promise.
Chelsea FC Looking Forward
Chelsea and their 2023-2024 Premier League season with a win against West Ham, Nottingham Forest, Tottenham, and a draw against Aston Villa. Despite ending the season on a high note, winning five out of their last six matches, they didn’t end as highly as they would have liked in the table.
This could be due to keeper errors, backline mistakes, not hitting open nets, and coaching issues. Now, with a new manager, he may be looking to shake things up a little bit and bring in some new players to challenge for a starting spot.
Current plays on the squad who can make a difference this upcoming season include Mudryk, the Ukrainian winger who has still yet to find his feet in the League. Another one to watch is Cole Palmer, the maestro up top who scored penalty kicks and coolly slotted home goals. Enzo Fernandez is an engine in the middle of the park who can link up nicely with Conor Gallagher.
If the Dane was going to join the goalkeeper union here at Chelsea, he would hate to find a way to work together with the defenders, including Reece James, Gilchrist, Cucurella, Silva, and Chalobah. He would have been directly competing with the likes of Petrovic and Sanchez for the number one goalkeeping spot.
