After missing out last year, the Boston Celtics found themselves in the NBA Finals once again. This is the year they could finally obtain that 18th banner that they’ve been chasing for 16 years. They’ve had quite a few opportunities to get to the top of the mountain, but they’ve all petered out.
A lot of people believe that the Dallas Mavericks are going to steal the chip from the Celtics. If this does happen, Boston might make some big changes to their roster as their hunt for number 18 continues.
The Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown Debate
Are the Celtics going to trade Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown? Last year, I would confidently say no. However, things are different this time around. They are now surrounded by a superstar starting five with the addition of Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis. Brad Stevens basically handed them the keys to winning the NBA Finals. If any team is going to win the Finals, it should be this one.
If another failure occurs, fans are going to be calling for one of these players to go. However, unlike last season, I don’t think that player will be Jaylen Brown. Tatum has had some fantastic games, but he’s also had moments where it looks like he’s completely out of it. On the other hand, Brown was coming up in clutch moments and delivered the Boston Celtics some of their most important games. A bad loss this playoff season could mean we see Tatum leave Boston.
Boston Celtics Bench Revamping
The Boston Celtics bench has done well. Payton Pritchard is having a breakout season as he continues to provide amazing bursts of energy off the bench. Also, in the games that he has played, Neemias Queta has proven to be a solid backup center. Given some time, he could really grow and be a solid part of the team. However, some players aren’t getting it done for the Cs.
One of these players is Sam Hauser. In recent months, his three-point percentage has dropped, leading him to brick almost every shot he’s taken in important games. He has been playing some very solid defense, but the Celtics need him to hit his shots. Next up is Luke Kornet. He’s clearly become a better player this year, but when rebounding or grabbing loose balls, he always seems to fumble. These two players need to kick into high gear. The Celtics will need a high percentage of three-point shooting, and someone outside of Horford will fall back on if Porzingis can’t play.
Give Them Another Shot
Big changes will happen to this roster soon. However, chances are it won’t be after this season. One definite change will be the retirement of Al Horford, It isn’t set in stone, but if Horford wins his ring, he’s probably going to hang up his jersey and head home a winner. If this team loses, it shouldn’t be the end of the world.
After one season, Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis have already made a huge impact on the roster. If they were given one more year with this Celtics roster, I fully believe they’ll be back in the Finals next season and will win it all. However, if they lose the NBA Finals this season, I would not be surprised if rumors start to run that JT might want to go elsewhere.
