Two Iconic Germans on Way Out | Who Gets Perfect Goodbye in Champions League Final?

Champions league final

In club football, no other completion sparks emotion and controversy like the Champions League. It’s why many stars like Kylian Mbappe switch teams to pursue this elusive trophy.

With the Champions League final beckoning, Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid will battle for European supremacy. However, for two players, one more than the other, this Champions League final will have greater significance than for the rest of the players.

It’s two players who’ve left their mark on the game but have had contrasting fortunes with injuries and trophies. For one, this is a chance to end his career with a trophy he’s never won. But for his counterpart, it’s about adding one more Champions League final win under his belt.

So, which of these two German players will have the perfect Champions League final story?

Borussia Dortmund’s Cultic Hero

Over the past decade and a half, only Borussia Dortmund has consistently challenged Bayern Munich’s dominance in the Bundesliga. The club has done so by recruiting highly talented youngsters and molding them into world-beaters.

The Star Who Never Left

Some notable names to pass through their ranks are Mario Goetze, Shinji Kagawa, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, Robert Lewandowski, and Nuri Sahin. However, all these players left during their prime, leaving the club falling short of silverware.

But there’s one who’s gained a cultic following among the BVB faithful for his loyalty: Marco Reus. Playing primarily from the flank and in attacking midfield, the German maestro has given his all for the club. Sadly, for what seems to be the most part, he’s been on the treatment table.

Injuries have caused him to miss many key matches for both club and country. Consequentially, Marco Reus hasn’t won as many trophies as his talent demands. As a testament to his abilities, he’s a two-time German Footballer of the Year and three-time Bundesliga Player of the Year.

Last Chance at a Champions League Final

With several German cups and Supercups under his belt, Reus has failed to win the Bundesliga and Champions League. The closest he’s come with the latter is the Champions League final loss to Bayern Munchen in 2023.

Having announced that he’ll be leaving Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season, this is likely his final chance at claiming it. While Marco Reus will only play a small role in the game, he’ll hope his team can get him through the line this time around.

Real Madrid’s Heartbeat

Over the last decade, Real Madrid has made the Champions League final its home. From Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane to Luka Modric, Karim Benzema, and Cristiano Ronaldo, many stars have played a major role in this success.

Also among them is Toni Kroos. After leaving Bayern Munich, the German playmaker has enjoyed great success in the Champions League. He’s a five-time Champions League winner, seeking to add a sixth. Moreover, he’s also a three-time Bundesliga winner and four-time La Liga winner.

With such success, a win over Dortmund in this year’s Champions League Final will only be the icing on the Cake as he approaches retirement.

There’s no doubt that both players will want to leave their clubs on a high. But this largely comes down to their clubs. With a frightening contingent of Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo, and Toni Kroos, Real Madrid are deservedly favorites.

However, Borussia Dortmund has had an excellent and odd-defying path to the Champions League final. So, don’t rule them out just yet. With the grit of Emre Can and Marcel Sabitzer in midfield, along with the raw talent and speed of the likes of Adeyemi and in-form Jadon Sancho, the German side may be gearing up to cause an upset.
