Chael Sonnen was once a challenger himself back in 2010 and according to him, UFC 307 is going to be a big surprise. Sonnen who has come close to becoming a UFC champion three times and almost submitted Anderson Silva in 2010 knows what it is like to be the challenger against a formidable champion. Most people believe that Alex Pereira is easily going to dominate the challenger and defend his Light Heavyweight Title but the ‘loud mouth’ has something different to say. When he watches the upcoming Alex Pereira’s fight against Khalil Rountree Jr. for the UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 307, the former fighter only sees the ingredients for a night that could redefine the sport.
Chael Sonnen on Good Guy/Bad Guy
Chael Sonnen talked about the dominance of Khalil and how good his moves are. “First off, let me give you the hot take of the day. Khalil Rountree is going to walk through Pereira” he stated recently appeared on the Good Guy/Bad Guy podcast. According to him, the first thing to do is have a great match but Alex Pereira versus Khalil Rountree is the worst matchup. He continued saying:
“That is the worst matchup [for Pereira] I could think of. Excuse me, this is [WWE] Smackdown invading Raw, and let me explain. When we think of who’s going to go fight for a title on pay-per-view, we think of other guys who have won a whole bunch of fights on pay-per-view. Well, Khalil was from Smackdown, he came from the other show. He’s been fighting on the Fight Nights and at the [UFC] Apex and things like that.”
Victories of Khalil Rountree
Chael Sonnen also talked about the fighter that Khalil defeated in a row, which also included a very tough fighter who had been one at the top of the division. According to him, “He’s still won [five] in a row, he stopped [four] of those sons of guns, and one of them is a former No. 1 contender, our good friend [Anthony] ‘Lionheart’ [Smith].”
Sonnen appreciates the strategy of Khalil. As a counterfighter, Khalil loves when you punch or kick him first and that’s where he gets you on the ground and you are finished. This is an impressive strategy if someone has mastered it. He said, “It’s not Khalil swarming somebody or taking them down or submitting them. He is a counterfighter, and he loves when you punch or kick at him first. Khalil Rountree not only deserves this fight — and I’ll admit, I was surprised, I didn’t think this was the direction they were going to go — but I’ll tell you a problem, Khalil is going to win this fight.”
Final Thoughts
It would be a foolish move from Alex Pereira if he thought his opponent was weak because Khalil Rountree has a lot of experience in the sports and his history clearly says that he’s a tough one. Fighters like Anthony were defeated by this beast so, it’s going to be tough for Alex Pereira. On the other side, Alex is no less than a nightmare in the Octagon. Because if he catches you, then you’re down. But it’s going to be a tough fight for both of them. Do you support Alex Pereira or Khalil Rountree? Let us know in the comment section.
