Celta Vigo Part Ways With Rafael Benitez
Celta Vigo have parted ways with Rafa Benítez and his staff eight months after their appointment. Celta are 17th in La Liga, two points above the relegation zone, after Sunday’s 4-0 loss at the leaders, Real Madrid.
- A statement from the club on Tuesday said: “Rafa Benitez and his coaching staff are leaving RC Celta. It’s been eight months of absolute commitment and dedication for Celta. Yet the team “has not obtained the results expected by the club” during the former Real Madrid, Liverpool and Chelsea manager’s tenure, Celta said in a statement. “The club would like to express to Rafa Benítez and his assistants its most sincere gratitude for the honesty and professionalism they have shown since their arrival,” they added.
“RC Celta would also like to wish them the best of luck and success in the future.”
Celta has lost six of its last nine matches across all competitions, with victories at mid-table Osasuna and against last-place Almeria in the Spanish league. Real Sociedad eliminated it in the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey.
Celta’s next game is Sunday at 14th-place Sevilla, which sits four points ahead of the Vigo team.
