The Cleveland Cavaliers are worried about injury to the guards in their backcourt. They are already up against it trailing the Boston Celtics two-games-to-one in their best-of-seven series in the 2024 NBA Playoffs. That hill will not be any easier to climb as they host the Celtics for Game Four this evening in the OH-IO.
According to ESPN, Cavs all-star guard, Donovan Mitchell, is dealing with a left calf strain and is will not see the court in a pivotal game in this series. The five-time NBA All-star at the guard position, Mitchell is currently averaging almost close to 30 points and 5 assists per game during these Playoffs.
Other Cavaliers Guards Will Need to Step Up

That will be tough for a fairly low-scoring Cleveland guard situation outside of “Spida” in the line-up. Almost as concerning a loss for the Cavaliers with their star guard Donovan Mitchell not available is the absence of his defensive ability as he leads the squad in steals at 1.3/steals per game, tied with center Jarrett Allen. Cleveland’s big man will also need to play a much bigger role defensively in Mitchell’s absence.
The three next best options at the guard position for the Cleveland Cavaliers are combining for an average of 32.6/pts per game in these 2024 NBA Playoffs. Darius Garland, Caris LeVert and Max Strus will all need to significantly improve that offensive output for Cleveland to avoid shipping back to Boston down 3-1 in the series and facing elimination.
Boston’s Injury Luck Against Other Star Guards

This is not the first time Boston has lucked out to the injury bug in the 2024 NBA Playoffs. In Round One, the Miami Heat were without star guard Jimmy Butler in their first-round defeat at the hands of Boston. Now, the Cavaliers will attempt to avoid the same fate as the powerful Celtics look to continue their march toward the NBA Eastern Conference Final.
