As NFL teams prepare to make roster cuts ahead of the August 28 deadline, many players await the decisions that will determine the future of their professional careers. Some will stay with the team that picked them up, while others will have to find new opportunities to pursue their NFL dreams.

Undrafted Fullback Carson Steele is one of these players. Steele arguably had one of the most impressive preseason performances of any undrafted player this year, and he has become a fan favorite within Chiefs Kingdom. His standout play has also caught the attention of the Chiefs’ coaching staff and front office as they finalize their roster decisions.

Steele was born on October 21, 2002, and raised in Greenwood, Indiana. He attended Center Grove High School, where he played football for the Trojans. Steele finished his high school career rushing for 5,907 rushing yards. In his senior year in 2020, he recorded 1,659 yards and 31 touchdowns. His impressive play in his final year of high school earned him the title of Indiana’s “Mr. Football.”

Steele in College

Carson Steele signed his letter of intent to play college football at Ball State University in February 2016. Due to his long blonde hair and fitness obsession, he earned nicknames like “Fabio,” “Man of Steele” and “Thor.” During his freshman year in 2021, Steele squatted 615 pounds and could bench press 405 pounds.

Before the 2022 season, Steele was named one of college football’s top 100 “freaks” by Bruce Feldman of The Athletic. Carson Steele played 25 games for Ball State over two seasons, finishing with 2,447 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns with the Cardinals.

Then in January 2023, Steele transferred to UCLA for his final year of college football. He appeared in 12 games for the Bruins, starting nine of them. Steele led the team with 847 rushing yards and added six touchdowns to close out his collegiate career.

Steele In The Pros

Carson Steele entered the 2024 NFL Draft as a 6’0″, 228-pound fullback. Despite going undrafted, the Kansas City Chiefs signed him to a three-year contract worth $2.83 million, with an average annual salary of $943,333.

In Steele’s first preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he made an immediate impact with a 20-yard carry on his first professional attempt. He finished the game with four carries for 29 yards and scored the team’s only touchdown. Though his next game was quieter, Steele left a lasting impression in the final preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

“We’ll evaluate him. He looked good tonight, [and he’s] a physical kid,” Reid said postgame. “I know the guys were excited when he was carrying it, but we’ll see. He’s a good football player though. It didn’t really look like they wanted to tackle him. That’s a plus if you’re a running back.”

In that game, Carson Steele led the team with 50 rushing yards and a touchdown on just four carries. His performance included a 31-yard run that set up a 1-yard touchdown. Steele’s strong preseason performance solidified his case for making the Chiefs’ regular season roster.

Final Thoughts

In his limited professional opportunities, Carson Steele made the most of every snap. He showed his teammates, coaches, and Chiefs Kingdom that he’s willing to do whatever it takes to make the official 53-man roster.

Carson Steele’s journey to this point is a testament to his determination and work ethic. Now, he awaits the decision that will determine his next chapter, whether with the Chiefs or another NFL team. In a few short days, we’ll find out if Steele will continue living his dream in Kansas City or elsewhere in the NFL.
