The Carolina Panthers needed to revamp their offense this offseason. Last year, the unit struggled partly due to the struggles of Bryce Young. However, the talent around him was not great. There was no running game to speak of, which is usually what helps a rookie quarterback. After adding a wide receiver in the first round of the draft, the Panthers took the first running back off the board, former Texas Longhorn Jonathan Brooks.

Many analysts ranked Jonathan Brooks as the top running back in this draft class. While the overall consensus was that this draft class was weak at the position, that doesn’t mean it was void of talent. It is easy to see why the Carolina Panthers liked Brooks. He finished his career at Texas with a 6.2 yards per carry. In his junior year, he ran for 1,139 yards and 10 touchdowns while adding 25 receptions for 285 yards and another touchdown.
Last season, the Panthers signed Miles Sanders to a free-agent deal. He did not have the impact they were hoping for. This pick signals the team was looking for a more dynamic runner. They need someone who can take some pressure off the passing game and keep defenses honest.
An Interesting Offense
I’ll be the first to admit I am interested in what the Carolina Panthers are building on offense. Diontae Johnson was a great pickup for the team and immediately became the WR1. Last night, the team traded back up into the first round to grab Xavier Legette, who had an excellent final season in college. Jonathan Brooks joins the squad and probably won’t have much difficulty cementing himself as the RB1.
At the very least, this team is surrounding Bryce Young with enough talent that they can evaluate him. If he struggles again with these weapons, the Carolina Panthers might have to look at another plan at quarterback.
