Explosive Carlos Alcaraz Performance At French Open Leads To 6th Straight Win Over Greek Star

Carlos Alcaraz extended his win record over Stefanos Tsitsipas tonight to six consecutive wins in a straight sets win in their French Open quarterfinal clash. The match was a repeat of their 2023 clash in the same round of the tournament.

Carlos Alcaraz’s last defeat came at the hands of Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open. Rublev had gone on to win the tournament. On Friday, Alcaraz, who was seeded 3rd for the tournament, will take on Jannik Sinner, who was seeded 2nd, in the French Open semifinal.

How will this clash unfold?

Stefanos Tsitsipas’ start to the match was very shaky. After a few backhand errors, an Alcaraz forehand volley down the line sealed the early break for the Spaniard. Carlos Alcaraz then consolidated the break with an ace and a series of beautiful forehand volleys and footwork.

Both players remained on serve until the ninth game of the set. A drop shot error from Tsitsipas gifted Alcaraz a second break of his serve. The first set finished in 31 minutes with one break of Stefano’s serve separating them. This was the seventh consecutive set the Greek had dropped to the Spaniard.

Tsitsipas’ Backhand Lets Him Down

Carlos Alcaraz started the second set in equally quick fashion as the opening set. After a poor first game of the second set laden with poor backhand volleys, frustration was evident all over Stefanos Tsitsipas’s face. The backhand continued to be Tsitsipas’ problem in his first service game of the set. Carlos Alcaraz caused countless errors for his opponent with his high-bounce strategy.

It was another poor game that gifted the Spaniard a quick break of his serve to start the second set. The Greek clawed one game back after a relatively assertive fourth game. He managed to get his backhand firing and produced some powerful volleys that produced points that fired both him and the crowd up.

The problems with the backhand continued in the next game to give Alcaraz a 4-1 lead in the second set. Stefanos Tsitsipas finally got into his stride two games later when he was able to produce two break points. Carlos Alcaraz saved the first breakpoint after an exciting rally, but Tsitsipas pulled the rabbit out of his hat and scored the break of the Spaniard’s serve on the next break point. Alcaraz won the set with a tiebreak.

Alcaraz and Tsitsipas

Tsitsipas shook off a poor start to the first game of the third set which included a double fault, and held on to lead 1-0 in the third set. In the second game, it was Carlos Alcaraz’s turn to be shaky, but a shot into the net from Tsitsipas was enough for Alcaraz to rally himself to hold.

With the set at 2-1 in Tsitsipas’ favor, he complained to the chair umpire about “extended grunting” from Alcaraz. Two games later, a rally occurred that brought them to the net, ending with Tsitsipas producing an overhead smash that cannoned off Alcaraz’s heel. Tsitsipas apologized with a raise of his racket.

In game seven of the set, Tsitsipas capitulated with two double faults to gift Carlos Alcaraz a break of his serve. With that, the last vestiges of the French Open that Tsitsipas was holding on to slipped out of his hands. That was all the Spaniard needed. He held on to the break till he served out the set to beat the Greek for the 6th consecutive time.

Note:

The win over Stefano Tsitsipas is Carlos Alcaraz’s 23rd win of the year. It means he has qualified for three semifinals this year. The semifinal clash with Jannik Sinner on Friday would be the 2nd meeting between the two since Alcaraz defeated Sinner in the Indian Wells Open semifinal.
