Today’s 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win for Carlos Alcaraz over Daniil Medvedev is the third consecutive defeat for Daniil Medvedev against Carlos Alcaraz, the second of 2024. This is the third time both players have faced each other in a semifinal, coincidentally all have come in Grand Slam tournaments. The Russian has lost twice, both in Wimbledon.
Carlos Alcaraz has been one of the most difficult opponents to beat on tour in the last three years and he has only gotten better as the years have progressed. Daniil Medvedev knows this first hand, having lost five times in seven encounters since the Wimbledon Championships of 2021. The Russian only had praise for his opponent after the game.
Tough tough match. Carlos plays well. I feel like the plan I came up with was working not so badly, like the match was much closer than last year, but he’s tough to play. I felt like I was serving well, definitely not worse than other matches. Only five aces.
He seemed to like, touch almost every ball on the court, like running well, so I made some good points. I could have finished some, maybe at the net, but didn’t manage to do it. But yeah, in my opinion, he played much better than all the opponents I faced here before and I lost. Yeah, not much more to it.
Carlos Alcaraz Comes From Behind To Lead
Daniil Medvedev took a quick lead in the first set of the Wimbledon semifinal clash with Carlos Alcaraz. In under 24 minutes, the Russian was leading the Spaniard 3-1 after a break of the Spaniard’s serve.
Alcaraz then came up with a breakpoint opportunity in the fifth game of the set. A ensued between the third and fifth seed where Alcaraz saved a 124-mph wide serve from Medvedev with the Russian attacking the return at the net with a forehand to the far left side of the court.
The Spaniard caught up with the Russian’s forehand with a huge forehand volley of his own. Medvedev then sliced a backhand drop shot which led to an Alcaraz lob. Medvedev’s attempt at an overhead smash then went wide to gift Alcaraz the break back into the set.
Mended remained ruthless, breaking Carlos’ serve immediately after. That wasn’t enough to defeat the relentless Spaniard. A feathered drop shot on a breakpoint in the ninth game gave him another break back into the set. The Russian won the set with a tiebreak.
Alcaraz Overcomes Medvedev In 4 Sets
Carlos Alcaraz broke Medvedev’s serve in the fourth game of the second set with a forehand winner across the court which the Spaniard hit on the run. He had been two breakpoints up at the time. He went on to serve out the set to win 6-3.
The third set kept up the excitement of the match filled with nail-biting moments including fascinating exchanges at the net. Alcaraz kept hitting his varied shots, making it difficult for Daniil Medvedev to keep up with his game. He won the second set 6-4 with one breakpoint.
A ferocious forehand from Carlos Alcaraz in the first game of the fourth set would’ve sealed Medvedev’s fate if the Russian hadn’t found a way to break back and tie the set at 3-3. That didn’t stop Alcaraz. The Spaniard opened a 15-40 lead in the seventh game on Medvedev’s serve and sealed the break of the Russian’s serve with the second breakpoint opportunity when the Russian hit a backhand volley long.
Alcaraz went on to book his place in the 2024 Wimbledon Championships final after serving the set out to win 6-4.
The Spaniard will play a repeat of the 2023 final against Novak Djokovic who defeated Lorenzo Musetti in their semifinal clash. It will be an opportunity for the Spaniard to defend his title and a clash between the second and third seeds. This is Carlos Alcaraz’s second Grand Slam final of 2024 after featuring in the final of the French Open in June.
Happy about my performance today. I started nervously, I think. He was dominating the match, playing great tennis with his serves, and his return game.
It was difficult for me, but I tried to cool down all the nerves at the beginning of the second set. It was really helpful to be up 3-1 and after that, I could play my own game, I could enjoy a little more of the match… I moved well, so, in general, I think I played a really good match.
