Carlos Alcaraz Vs Stefano Tsitsipas H2H: Can Tsitsipas Overcome His Nemesis?

Tonight, two of the ATP’s most ferocious and promising talents, Stefano Tsitsipas and Carlos Alcaraz, will clash in the quarterfinals of the French Open, in a rematch of the same fixture exactly one year ago. Both of them have had a relatively successful year so far, with both of them winning one title each. The Greek has had 24 wins and nine losses on tour this year, while the Spaniard has had 18 wins and five losses.

Carlos Alcaraz is regarded as one of the fastest-rising tennis stars on the ATP tour. At the age of 21, the young Spanish tennis professional has won 13 titles on the ATP tour with 173 wins under his belt. He turned pro in 2018 and won his first Grand Slam title, the US Open, in 2022. He also defeated Novak Djokovic in the final of the 2023 Wimbledon to win his second Grand Slam title.

On the other side of the court, tonight will be Stefano Tsitsipas, the topmost Greek tennis professional. The 25-year-old attained his highest ATP ranking in August of 2021 when he climbed up to 3rd. He’s won 11 titles in his 8-year professional career, including the Nitto ATP Finals of 2019 when he defeated Dominic Thiem in the final. His style is known to be similar to the tennis legend, Roger Federer, and he has won 324 matches at tour-level.

Tsitsipas Vs Alcaraz

The first time Stefano Tsitsipas and Carlos Alcaraz met on tour was in the 2021 US Open 3rd round. Alcaraz was still a relative newcomer on the tour and wasn’t a seeded player. Stefano was the 3rd seed. Their match lasted five sets and over four hours, giving Alcaraz his first-ever win over a top 5 player.

The second-ever meeting between them was in the 2022 Miami Open 4th round. The teenage sensation at the time, Carlos Alcaraz, was in phenomenal form. He produced 11 breakpoints across the two sets, breaking Tsitsipas four times. Alcaraz went on to win 7-5, 6-3 in an hour and 50 minutes.

2023 Barcelona Open final

They met again, this time on clay-court in the 2022 Barcelona Open quarterfinals. This time, the match was much more closely contested than the Miami Open. Stefano lost the first set to Alcaraz but rallied to win the second set. The Spanish teenager, however, was too strong for the Greek, winning 6-2 in the deciding set.

The 2023 Barcelona Open final was the fourth consecutive time these two had faced each other. Alcaraz had gone into the 2023 Barcelona Open as the defending champion looking to be the first player since Rafael Nadal to win it in consecutive years. Alcaraz was ruthless in the match, winning three of six break points and all points contested on his second serve. He defeated Tsitsipas again to win the title 6-3, 6-4.

In the 2023 French Open quarterfinal, they met again. Alcaraz defeated his opponent for the 5th consecutive time in three sets, capitalizing on Tsitsipas’ double faults. After two relatively easy sets, Tsitsipas stepped up his game in the third set to force a tiebreak which Alcaraz ultimately won. Alcaraz went on to lose to Djokovic in the semifinal in four sets.

Carlos Alcaraz started with a quick 3-set win over J. J. Wolf in the 1st round. He took on Jesper de Jong, a qualifier, in the 2nd round and dropped a set in the 3rd set. Alcaraz went on to win in four sets.

Alcaraz went on to defeat Sebastian Korda and Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets in the 3rd and 4th rounds consecutively. Meanwhile, Stefano Tsitsipas got Márton Fucsovics in the 1st round. After a straight sets victory, he faced Daniel Altmaier.

Like Alcaraz in his 2nd round encounter, Tsitsipas dropped the 3rd set but won the match in four sets. He then defeated Zhang Zhizhen in the 3rd round in straight sets. His 4th round match against Matteo Arnaldi wasn’t as straightforward. Stefano dropped the 1st set but recovered to win the next three sets.
