Carlos Alcaraz’s clash with Daniil Medvedev could be one for the ages. Both players have played 5-set epic clashes already in the 2024 Wimbledon Championships and seeing another 5-set classic is within the realms of possibility given their current forms and level of determination.
Carlos Alcaraz will be chasing his fourth Grand Slam title, while Daniil Medvedev will be chasing his second. The Spaniard has won three of the five Grand Slam semifinals he’s played in, while the Russian has won six of his eight Grand Slam semifinals.
Whoever wins, one of the two of these players will be appearing in their second Grand Slam final of 2024 after Medvedev and Alcaraz appeared in the Australian Open and the French Open finals in January and June respectively.
Daniil Medvedev In Wimbledon
Daniil Medvedev entered the Wimbledon Championships as the number five seed. The Russian took on Aleksandar Kovacevic in the first round of the tournament and had a relatively easy game. Daniil Medvedev had no problem getting through in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
The Russian’s sights turned to Alexandre Muller. This clash wasn’t as straightforward as the Kovacevic clash. Daniil Medvedev dropped the first set but succeeded in fighting back to win 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 7-5 over the Frenchman.
In the third round, Daniil Medvedev clashed with Jan-Lennard Struff. The German has had a solid 2024 season and has been good on the grass-court lately. He got to the quarterfinals of both the Stuttgart and Halle Open tournaments before Wimbledon.
Daniil Medvedev defeated the German in the first two sets. There were multiple rain delays and Struff took the third set, but the match ended 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 in favor of the Russian.
In the fourth round, Daniil Medvedev’s Wimbledon train stopped at the Grigor Dimitrov stop. Unfortunately, during the first set, Grigor Dimitrov sustained an injury during a fall and the No. 10 seed eventually had to retire.
This pitted Daniil Medvedev against Jannik Sinner, the world No. 1. The world No. 1 had defeated the Russian in a heart-breaking loss at the Australian Open final in January, coming from two sets down.
Medvedev didn’t allow a repeat of that day this time. He won the second and third of the first three sets, and although he dropped the fourth set, won the match, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3. Sinner had gone down with an illness during the match and had recovered to almost shock the Russian.
Carlos Alcaraz In Wimbledon
Carlos Alcaraz entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed. He was also the defending champion after defeating Novak Djokovic in the final of the 2023 Wimbledon edition, as well as the winner of the French Open. He entered the tournament as one of the three overwhelming favorites for the title together with Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner.
Carlos Alcaraz started the tournament against the qualifier, Mark Lajal. The first set was more tedious than the world No. 3 would’ve liked, but he made it through in straight sets 7-6, 7-5, 6-2.
The Spaniard then took on Aleksandar Vukic. It was like deja vu, with another first set needing a tiebreak to decide it. However, the second and third set were relatively straightforward for the Spaniard.
Carlos Alcaraz’s third-round clash was a real battle. He was paired with Frances Tiafoe, the No. 29 seed. The American won the first and third sets, with Alcaraz having to force a fifth set to remain in the tournament. In the end, the defending champion won the match 5-7, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.
Alcaraz’s fourth-round clash was another battle. His opponent, Ugo Humbert, had gotten to the semifinal of the Libema Open. The Frenchman tried to kickstart a comeback in the third set of their clash after losing the first two sets, but Alcaraz quenched the spark5to win the match in four sets 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
The quarterfinal pitted Carlos Alcaraz with Tommy Paul. The American had just won the Queen’s Club Championships and had been in scintillating form since then. Both players had faced each other four times on tour and defeated each other two times each. The American took the first set but was unable to stop the Alcaraz hurricane that blew him away 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
