No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz just won his first French Open title. The 21-year-old Spaniard has made it to three Grand Slam finals in his career, each of which he won. However, this final match was much different from the previous ones. He started off strong in the first set, taking a commanding 6-3 lead. Then, due to a combination of unforced errors and Zverev’s excellent execution, Alcaraz found himself down 2 sets to 1.
With his back against the wall, Alcaraz gathered his composure and dominated the rest of the match, winning the fourth set 6-1 and the final set 6-2.
How No.3 Carlos Alcaraz Defeated No. 4 Zverev
Carlos Alcaraz found himself in familiar territory after being down two sets to one against Alexander Zverev. In fact, he was also down two sets to one in the semifinal against Jannik Sinner and managed to come back and win. Coming off a recent comeback like that, and having a close 7-5 third set against Zverev, gave Alcaraz the confidence to know he could come back.
Unfortunately for Zverev, he found himself with an undesired result yet again. He is now 0-2 in Grand Slam finals. He was also the victim of another amazing comeback in the 2020 U.S. Open when he lost after having a 2-set lead.
Carlos Alcaraz Sets History With French Open Tile
Carlos Alcaraz joins the elite company with Rafael Nadal as the youngest player to win three Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces. In fact, he completed this remarkable feat at an age of 1 1/2 years younger than Nadal did. This achievement invites even more comparisons between the two players. For years, Alcaraz has been compared to Nadal for his attitude and style of play.
While they are each their own player, the comparisons are well warranted. Given Nadal’s status as the King of Clay, Carlos Alcaraz has demonstrated similar dominance on this surface. It was expected that Alcaraz would win a day at the French Open, for many fans it was just a matter of if and not when.
What’s Left For Carlos Alcaraz After French Open Win?
Now that Alcaraz has won the French Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open, all that remains for him is the Australian Open. The question is, when will he win it? It will be hard to surpass Novak Djokovic, who has dominated the Australian Open for such a long time. However, with Djokovic’s recent injury, Alcaraz might have a better shot. If he wins the next Australian Open, he will have won a different Grand Slam each year for the past four years.
However, Alcaraz probably has higher goals than just winning each Grand Slam. Even so, what he has accomplished so far in his career has been out of reach for many tennis players, so we should expect him to take his time and celebrate his accomplishments for now.
