The Arizona Cardinals face a legitimate challenge in their third game against the Detroit Lions. But coming right before it, the Cardinals will face an injury that could keep them from being at full strength with their offense. Starting offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum did not practice on Tuesday and may not play for the team. The loss would be a significant hindrance to the Cardinals’ opportunity to win.
Injury Threats to the Cardinals
Kelvin Beachum has been a valuable cog for the Cardinals this year. He started in place of injured tackle Jonah Williams during Week 1. Beachum looked not so great in his first game against the Buffalo Bills, but he bounced back well against the Los Angeles Rams. Losing him for practice with the hamstring will take away some of that protection from the Bengals.
Beachum is an anchor on the offensive line and more than just a regular player. Without him, they are going to be changing quickly at the assembly line. With that kind of robust, hard-hitting defense by the Lions, featuring Aidan Hutchinson as one of its stand-out pass rushers, having that reliable tackle becomes vital. He already accumulated five sacks in his last game, which makes this a hammer of a matchup. The Cardinals need their best guys out on the playing field to hold up well.
Alternates in the Starting Lineup
If Beachum is out of the picture, all eyes may be on Jackson Barton, who was promoted from the practice squad. Barton has played only a few snaps in two seasons, for a total of six snaps. Charlie Heck could also come into play. Heck had more extensive experience than either of these prospects, with 41 games started in his career, including four starts last season with the Houston Texans. It’s going to take a whole lot for one of these guys to step up, but someone must.
In the NFL, every game matters, and the performance under pressure often determines who wins or loses. The Cardinals will need quarterback Kyler Murray and the rest of the offensive weapons to make plays regardless of who is in front of them blocking. It does promote teamwork and trusting each other so much among its players.
These injuries can dent the confidence of a team, but they also present opportunities for other people to show their stuff. Whichever person takes to the field, the Cardinals must present themselves as a cohesive unit. While losing Kelvin Beachum would indeed be a terrible blow, that does not mean the team cannot win its way out of this hole. Determined and astute tactics could help them get out of this hole and grab the much-needed win over the Lions. Of course, only fans can wish for this real game day when their team finally surmounts the obstacles and shows its face in the game.
