Canelo Álvarez vs Jaime Munguía Preview

Canelo Alvarez

Canelo Álvarez will take on Jaime Munguía this Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It should be an interesting bout and possibly Álvarez’s toughest fight in some time. Munguía is a young fighter who is looking for an opportunity to shine on a big stage. This could be that stage.

Canelo Álvarez is clearly the favorite going into this fight with his proven track record and simply put he is the super middleweight champion of the world. Until someone takes his place at this weight class he will continue to be seen as the best. Jaime Munguía may have the potential to take the throne with an undefeated record and some impressive knockouts.

But can he fight with the best?

Alvarez and Jamie Munguia have shown a lot of respect towards each other in the lead-up to the fight. As fellow countrymen from Mexico, they both acknowledge their similar road to the top. Canelo Álvarez went pro at 15 years old, and Jamie Munguía went pro at 17 years old. They both fought many fighters at a young age and put up a lot of flashy knockouts to get to this point.

Where Canelo Álvarez has differed is he got an early title shot and a big opportunity to prove himself at a younger age. At 23 years old, Canelo Álvarez fought the legendary Floyd Mayweather for the light middleweight title and was schooled to say the least. Mayweather dominated from start to finish and Canelo Álvarez looked out of place.

Jamie Munguía is 27 years old and has yet to fight someone of note. His biggest win may be his last fight, a 7th-round TKO against John Ryder.Ryder was defeated by Canelo Álvarez in a unanimous decision. Jamie Munguía hasn’t been embarrassed by a fighter yet, that could happen on Saturday.

Canelo Álvarez had a heated presser on Wednesday after Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya tried to smear Canelo Álvarez with his past failed drug tests. Golden Boy is promoting Jamie Munguía. This angered Canelo Álvarez and he countered when it was his turn to speak bringing up the fact that he left Golden Boy because he accused De La Hoya of trying to steal money from him.

It was an eventful presser with both sides having a back-and-forth. Jamie Munguía remained calm throughout the whole ordeal. It seems this will be a competitive fight with a lot of memorable quotes that will be replayed for years to come. Will Canelo Álvarez’s experience prove to be the key or will Jamie Munguía’s size advantage and power be too much?
