Canelo Alvarez Dominates Edgar Berlanga for Unanimous Decision Win

Canelo Alvarez

One thing in boxing that remains constant is Canelo Alvarez’s ability to thrive against loud, brash challengers. On Saturday night, Alvarez once again proved why he is one of the best, taking on a tough, unbeaten Puerto Rican boxer, Edgar Berlanga. Berlanga gave a tough time to Alvarez, but the 34-year-old Mexican superstar outpointed him in a unanimous points decision after twelve hotly contested rounds.

Challenge Accepted: Canelo Alvarez

In contrast, Edgar Berlanga immediately started with the pursuit. Berlanga, the young and strong competitor came to the fight with anger, and desire for a victory to prove himself against the experienced titlist. However, Alvarez is well-known for his cool-headedness and high tolerance to pressure and acted in a typical fashion. He bit down on his mouthguard and used his instincts, intelligence, and strength to slowly put pressure on his opponent.

Berlanga started his professional boxing career with a loop of sixteen first-round knockouts and was ready to have a tough tussle against Alvarez. Instead of letting it all hangout, Berlanga looked tentative at times, maybe knowing he would be facing one of the best defensive fighters and a precise counterpuncher in Canelo Alvarez.

A Comprehensive Performance by Canelo

Alvarez delivered a near-perfect performance, fighting with precision. He landed 50 percent of his power punches throughout the fight, forcing Berlanga to stay on the defensive. Alvarez scored the only knockdown of the fight in round three when he hammered Berlanga with a perfect left hook. Berlanga managed to get up quickly and endure the round but the following knockdown was the initial of the rest of the fight.

However, the fight had moments where Berlanga demonstrated the capacity to endure Alvarez’s pressure; however, Berlanga had few possibilities to apply pressure to Alvarez. The scorecards revealed that Canelo Alvarez won 9 rounds on one card and 10 rounds on the other two cards. The win was the 62nd in the career of Alvarez who now boasts of a record of 66 fights and counting after debut in 2005.

The win also bolsters his legacy, with previous championships at 154, 160, and 175 pounds.

I did good. But now what are they gonna say, Alvarez said. Now I fight younger fighters. Before they say I only fought older fighters. They always talk. I’m the best fighter in the world.

(It was) my experience and my talent and my hard work and my intelligence, he said. If you have talent and you have no discipline, you have nothing.
