Canada has chosen Jesse Marsch as their new national team head coach, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still out of football management. Last month, there were reports that Solskjaer was approached by Canada for the position of their new boss. However, it is Marsch who has been chosen to take on this exciting new challenge leading up to this summer’s Copa America. After being sacked by Leeds in February 2023, Marsch has been without a managerial role. Unfortunately, his departure coincided with Leeds’ eventual relegation from the Premier League. In his first season, he successfully kept them in the Premier League, but the following year proved otherwise.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Misses Opportunity To Coach Canada
Since his departure as the manager of Manchester United in November 2021, Solskjaer has been out of the managerial game. His tenure at Man United came to an end following a disappointing 4-1 defeat against Watford. Ever since that time, the 51-year-old has been involved in the world of youth football in Norway while also taking on the role of a match analyst for UEFA.
In February, the six-time Premier League winner expressed his desire to make a comeback in club management. He made it clear that he wouldn’t be hasty in accepting a new position. During a recent event in New Delhi, he said:
“I’ve got at least one club job in me. It has to be an interesting one, somewhere, an adventure, somewhere I can be myself.
“No disrespect but after you’ve managed Manchester United for three years it’s like where do you go? I want to feel that pressure again. When you see the games, you miss it.
“You always want to manage against the best football people in the world. The Premier League is the best league in the world, the most difficult. I had been there for three years. Yes, it was a hard job. It’s an extraordinary job, but you’re the face of the biggest and best club in the world. You have to be ready all the time to be scrutinised. So, I enjoyed it but I needed a break after I stepped away.”
Also, there are rumors that Jose Mourinho declined an interview for the position, and the same goes for Frank Lampard as they both await new opportunities.
New Canada Manager Gets Copa America and World Cup Chance
Marsch is set to take on the challenge of coaching at two major tournaments. In June, Canada will be participating in the highly anticipated Copa America. However, their chances of winning the tournament are currently quite low. According to Fabrizio Romano, Marsch has secured a contract until 2026, with the initial agreement lasting until the end of the World Cup.
Canada has participated in two men’s World Cups in the past. As one of the host countries for the next tournament, they have automatically qualified this time. If Marsch remains in his position, he will have the opportunity to coach at the tournament. With the USA being joint hosts alongside Canada (and Mexico), there is a strong possibility that Marsch will have the opportunity to return to his home country as the manager of their bitter rivals. It will certainly be intriguing to witness the kind of reception he receives from the American fans.
