Canada Reaches Quarterfinals Despite 6-Point Deduction

Canada has somehow defied the odds to reach the quarterfinals despite being accused of – and punished – for spying on New Zealand before a crucial game in the Paris Olympics. Canada beat New Zealand in one of their Group Stage matches, only to see the hard-earned three points fall by the wayside as their coach was fired and their points were taken away from them.

Although the lawyers weren’t at fault for the incident, they had to be held accountable for their egregious actions. Despite the harsh six-point deduction, the Canada women’s team showed just how resilient they are. They fought back to earn a spot in the next round due to their attacking playing style and teamwork.

Now, they face off against a tough team in the quarterfinals to try to advance to the final match of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Canada vs. Colombia

Canada earned a 1-0 win against Colombia yesterday in the final match of Group A in the Olympics, giving them the much-needed three points to progress to the next round. Key players for Canada, like Quinn, Kadeisha Buchanan, Ashley Lawrence, Janine Beckie, and Jessie Fleming, all had fantastic games that helped their team earn the goal and the victory for their country.

Vanessa Gilles scored in the 61st minute against Colombia to give her team the lead. They kept the lead for the remaining half-hour of the game to earn the win.

Canada’s big win against Colombia saw a lot of interesting results in the group stages that brought into question which teams would move forward. There were a few definites, like the USWNT and Germany, but other items were waiting to see the other results that would determine if they would move forward.

Since only the top two teams in each Group moved forward, teams like Australia and Canada were left waiting to see if their third-place finish in their respective groups would be enough. They needed the maximum number of points based on goals scored, wins, and teams played.

Since Canada beat New Zealand and France, one of the top-ranked teams in the world, the big win against Colombia was enough to send them through to the quarterfinals with only three points. Even though Colombia lost to Canada, they still were able to progress to the next round after being one of the best-ranking third-place teams in the Olympics.

Teams in the Quarterfinals

Other teams to advance include France due to their 2-1 victory over New Zealand. Their star striker, Marie-Antoinette Katoto netted twice to give the hosts a comfortable win before heading into the knockout rounds.

Germany easily beat Zambia 4-1, with Schueller also scoring two goals that would see Deutschland cruise to the quarterfinals with a second-place finish in their group.

Although things were joyous for Germany, Spain, the U.S., and Colombia, it was another story for the Matildas. Australia is now officially out of the Olympics after they lost 2-1 to the USWNT and a poor goal differential to the other third-placed teams. Brazil and Colombia both had better goal differences than Australia, who saw a hefty 6-5 scoreline against Zambia that went against them in the rankings.

Furthermore, Brazil lost to Spain with an excruciating 2-0 scoreline that also saw one of the greatest players of all time, Marta, receive a red card. Marta has already announced her retirement from the national team, so this could very well be her last game with her Brazilian teammates.

Lastly, Japan is moving on to the quarterfinals to face the USA after beating Nigeria 3-1. Maika Hamano scored in the 22nd minute, opening the floodgates for Mina Tanaka to score two more before halftime.
