Can Pakistan Still Qualify For T20 World Cup Super Eight?

With Pakistan’s two defeats in two matches, the path to the T20 World Cup Super 8 has become extremely difficult. Pakistan cannot afford even one more loss in their remaining T20 World Cup 2024 group matches. But what happens if Canada beats Pakistan?

Like England, Pakistan must not only win their remaining games but also hope that the United States (in Group A) falters. India is expected to progress without any loss. They need only one position up for Super 8 selections. At the same time, the United States and PAK compete for it.

Pakistan is currently up against Canada, which has won one of its first two games. Pakistan ranked fourth in the five-team Group A rankings. PAK cannot afford to make a single mistake.

Pakistan’s T20 World Cup 2024 Campaign So Far

The Pakistan cricket team has had a difficult start to the T20 World Cup 2024, with two consecutive losses in the group stage. Under Babar Azam’s guidance, Pakistan experienced a surprise setback against the US and a tight loss to India by 6 runs.

Well, these results have significantly reduced their chances of qualifying for the competition’s Super 8 round. Here’s an overview of PAK’s previous matches:

Against the United States: In their first encounter, PAK was beaten by a determined United States squad. This defeat has made PAK enough weak to qualify for the Super Eight.

Against India: Despite Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf taking three wickets each, Pakistan was only able to limit India to 119 runs. However, a disciplined bowling by Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya secured a close victory for India.  Jasprit Bumrah was awarded Player of the Match.

Current Standing of PAK

– Number of matches played: 2

– Won matches: 0

– Earned points: 0

To Qualify for the Super 8 stage, Pakistan Has to:

  1. Win Remaining Matches: Pakistan must win their next two matches against Canada and Ireland.
  1. Other Results: They must hope that neither the United States nor Canada win any of their remaining matches. This would leave the United States with just four points, decreasing competitiveness for qualifying positions.
  1. Net Run Rate (NRR): If PAK wins their remaining matches and the United States loses theirs, both teams will have four points. In this scenario, qualifying will be determined by Net Run Rate, which means Pakistan must win by big margins to boost its NRR.

Given these circumstances, Pakistan’s journey to the Super 8 stage seems not easy. They rely not only on their performance but also on the results of other matches in the group.

What Happens if Rain Cancels the PAK vs. CAD Match?

If the entire match is rained out, Pakistan and Canada will split the points, with each side receiving ‘1’. In such a situation, Babar’s players would be unable to overcome the USA’s four-point lead. As a result, a washed-out event would see PAK eliminated from the Super 8 race.

It should also be noted that no reserve day is scheduled for any group-stage match in the T20 World Cup 2024. So, Pakistan will qualify if India loses their next two games against the USA and Canada, And the USA drops their remaining matches. Even if the USA loses to India, they may still qualify for the Super 8s with a victory over Ireland. PAK don’t have it all in their hands at the moment.
