Immortality Beckons For Novak Djokovic In Epic Wimbledon Final

Novak Djokovic is the most decorated tennis player in the men’s category in Grand Slam tournaments. The Serbian has won 24 Grand Slam titles and has featured in 37 finals across a 21-year career. Djokovic has won 375 Grand Slam matches in the 75 tournaments he’s featured in.

Novak Djokovic is the only male tennis player to win a non-calendar-year Grand Slam. He is one of eight players to win a career Grand Slam, one of four to win it twice, and the only male tennis player to win it thrice.

The Serbian won 34 consecutive matches from the 2018 Wimbledon Championships ending in the 2023 final, a period where he won four consecutive titles. He had started the 2018 tournament on three titles, five less than Roger Federer’s Wimbledon record of eight titles, and finished the run barely losing out on equalling the record with his eighth.

The Legend Of Federer’s Wimbledon Record

Roger Federer

Roger Federer is the most decorated tennis player in the history of the Wimbledon Championships. The Swiss giant won his first Wimbledon title in 2003 and collected the next four in succession. He won one of the next three titles, losing the other two to Rafael Nadal before Novak Djokovic came into the fray.

The Serbian picked up his first Wimbledon title in 2011 against Rafael Nadal, but Roger Federer returned in 2012 to win his seventh Wimbledon title, equalling Pete Sampras’ record. The American had won seven titles in eight years. Novak Djokovic returned to the final in 2013, but a spirited Andy Murray, making his second appearance in a Wimbledon final, was too much for the Serbian.

Djokovic went on a 16-match winning streak after losing to Andy Murray, picking up two Wimbledon titles in the process. The Serbian had defeated Roger Federer to win both titles. The streak ended in the third round of the 2016 edition against Sam Querrey. Federer returned to a Wimbledon final in 2017, winning his eighth title and breaking Pete Sampras’ record.

Djokovic then began his dominance in Wimbledon, winning four consecutive titles in five years; the tournament was suspended in 2020 due to Covid. He also defeated Federer in the 2019 final. This marked the Swiss’ final appearance in a Wimbledon final as he retired from professional tennis in 2021 following a quarterfinal loss to Hubert Hurkacz.

Novak Djokovic was close to equalling Roger Federer’s Wimbledon record in 2023 when he faced Carlos Alcaraz in his fifth consecutive Wimbledon final, his ninth in total. Alcaraz stopped this charge, but the strong-willed Serbian has forced his way past the obstacle a knee injury posed, to another opportunity.

Road To The Final

Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic sustained a knee injury in the fourth round of the French Open against Francisco Cerundolo and struggled to overcome the Argentine in five sets. After this win, he retired from the tournament due to the injury and underwent surgery on the knee.

After the surgery, rehabilitation began and one week to Wimbledon, the Serbian entered London, beginning his training to get the knee in top shape. During this period, he had practice sessions with top players like Emil Ruusuvuori, Frances Tiafoe, Jannik Sinner, and even an exhibition match against Daniil Medvedev.

25 days after his surgery, Novak Djokovic took on Vit Kopriva in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships. The Serbian wore a knee brace and swept past the 27-year-old Czech in straight sets. After him, Djokovic defeated Jacob Fearnley, Alexei Popyrin, and Holger Rune. Alex De Minaur, Djokovic’s quarterfinal opponent, withdrew from the tournament due to injury, sending the Serbian into the semifinal where he defeated Lorenzo Musetti.

Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz, who entered the tournament as the defending champion, the third seed, and one of three main contenders for the title including Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner, defeated Mark Lajal, Aleksandar Vukic, Frances Tiafoe, Ugo Humbert, and Tommy Paul to reach the semifinal.

The bookies had favored a semifinal featuring Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, but Daniil Medvedev had other ideas, knocking out the world No. 1 in their quarterfinal clash. Carlos Alcaraz then defeated Daniil Medvedev in a repeat of the 2023 semifinal which had been between the two of them.

The 2024 Wimbledon Championships final would be a repeat of the 2023 final. It would be Carlos Alcaraz’s fourth appearance in a Grand Slam final. It would be an opportunity for the 21-year-old to win a Grand Slam title in every final he’s played in if he defeats Novak Djokovic on Sunday.
