For the south side of Chicago, things have gone in the wrong direction since 2021. After their best record since 2005 in 2021, the club has done a complete 180 and has missed the postseason in back-to-back years. Injuries, bad coaching, pitchers sleeping in the bullpen, and tons of other issues have plagued the White Sox since 2022. But there’s one thing that all Sox fans can agree on: Luis Robert Jr. is finally showing his true potential as a generational talent in the MLB.
Luis Robert Jr. 2023 Season
For the first time in his four-year career, Robert Jr. played over 100 games in 2023 and was the best Sox player by far last year. He had career highs all across the board, with 38 HRs, 80 RBIs, 36 doubles, and a .857 OPS. Robert Jr. was also an all-star for the first time in his career and competed in the home run derby in Seattle. He also took home his first silver slugger in 2o23.
There’s no doubt that Robert Jr. is a spectacular player. At 26 years old and entering his 5th season, he has a Gold Glove, a Silver Slugger, and an all-star game appearance under his belt. The only thing that has been holding him back prior to the 2023 season was the amount of games he missed due to injuries. But hopefully, after his 145-game appearance last year, he has put all of those injury bugs to bed.
He has shown that he is a clutch player when given the opportunity. In 7 playoff games, he has 11 hits in 28 at-bats, a .393 BA, and an OPS of .952. During the 2021 series against the Astros, he had seven hits in 4 games and finished the series with a 1.022 OPS.
Luis Robert Jr.: Looking Ahead To 2024
With spring training right around the corner, White Sox fans are eager to see number 88 back on the field. White Sox fans will also be asking for another tremendous season out of Robert Jr. Can he live up to the pressure?
New White Sox general manager Chris Getz has made a couple of moves this offseason to try to rebuild the White Sox as quickly as possible. One of the bigger moves he made was trading LHP Aaron Bummer to the Atlanta Braves for SP Mike Soroka, infielder Nicky Lopez, left-handed pitcher Jared Shuster, shortstop Braden Shewmake and right-handed pitcher Riley Gowens.
Getz also brought in veteran players like SS Paul Dejong and RHP John Brebia while also bringing in some young prospects like Dominic Fletcher from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
With all the new moves Getz has made, will Luis Robert Jr. flourish under this new team and management? White Sox fans are crossing their fingers, hoping that the future will not repeat itself, as nobody wants to go through another long and grueling rebuild.
