The Texans have missed Joe Mixon since Week 3 due to an ankle injury. Most reports have shown that his ankle didn’t suffer any critical damage. That being said, Mixon has still been on the sideline for the last two weeks. Houston’s coaching staff is positive that he can play on Sunday and have a big impact on a running game that they might need against the Bills.
Mixon Didn’t Practice on Wednesday
Joe Mixon wasn’t on the practice field Wednesday. While that isn’t heartening news, this might be a red herring concerning Mixon’s status. According to Head Coach DeMeco Ryans, veterans usually don’t join Wednesday practice.
“We didn’t have those guys practice [Wednesday] so we will see tomorrow,” said DeMeco Ryans. Mixon did practice on the previous Friday before the game against the Jaguars, but he ultimately didn’t play. If Mixon practices on Thursday, it would be highly likely he will suit up for the Bills.
Mixon Injured Back in Week 2
Mixon’s injury came during an intense tackle on Sunday Night Football against the Bears in Week 2. The defender grabbed Mixon by the hip and dragged him to the ground, landing on Mixon’s ankle. Some around the league thought it was a hip-drop tackle, which might be banned by the league.
Shortly after the game, Mixon got an MRI which showed no severe damage. Since then, he’s been close to playing against the Vikings and Jaguars, he just didn’t take the field.
Houston’s Running Attack Needs Mixon
The Texans are anxious to get Mixon back on the field considering how they’ve been running that ball in his absence. Over the past two weeks, Mixon’s backup, Cam Akers, hasn’t rushed for over 60 yards.
In that stretch, the Texans suffered their first loss (to the Vikings) and almost lost a second game (against the Jaguars). Houston is hoping Mixon can get back to his form from week 1. In their victory over the Colts, Mixon had 30 carries for 159 yards and a touchdown. Mixon was clearly brought in to be a big part of this offense, and his absence is having a huge impact.
Mixon’s play might be a key to victory against the Bills. Buffalo has shown that they play better against pass-heavy teams rather than run-heavy teams. In fact, the only loss they have so far was against the Ravens, where Derrick Henry almost had 200 yards on the ground.
Having a strong running game will also benefit quarterback C.J. Stroud. It takes the pressure off of him and keeps him out of obvious passing situations. If Mixon doesn’t play against the Bills, the Texans would have to hope Collins and Diggs have huge games if they hope to win.
