It was announced that Defenceman Tyson Barrie has signed a PTO (Professional Try Out) with the Calgary Flames, Barrie is still eligible to sign a contract with any NHL team. A PTO is not a guaranteed contract, which is what Barrie is going to try to earn through training camp and preseason. As an RHD (Right Handed Defenceman) Barrie is likely to be competing against via DailyFaceoff, Daniil Miromanov, Rasmus Andersson, and Brayden Pachal.
Tyson Barrie’s Career so Far
Tyson Barrie was drafted by the Avalanche in the 3rd round, 64th overall, of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Barrie made his NHL Debut in 2012, but only played 10 games for the Avalanche in the season where he was a star in the AHL, named to the All-Star team, and put up 32 points in 49 AHL games. 2013-14 was when Barrie got his footing in the NHL, putting up 38 points in 64 games, a solid number for Barrie.
2014-15 was even better as Barrie signed a new two-year contract with Colorado worth $5.2 million as an RFA, he was eighth in scoring for defencemen that season with 53 points and became only the 4th defenceman in Avalanche history to achieve the feat of 50+ points in a season at the time, after Sandis Ozoliņš, Rob Blake, and Ray Bourque.
After another successful season in 2015-16, he settled with Colorado in arbitration and signed a new four-year, $22 million contract with the Avalanche. In the last year of his contract, the Avalanche traded Tyson Barrie and Alexander Kerfoot to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Center Nazem Kadri and Calle Rosen and picks were involved as well.
In October of 2020, Tyson Barrie signed a one-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers, Barrie shined in his first season in Edmonton leading the entire NHL Defenceman in points with 48 in the shortened season, but received zero votes for the Norris Trophy, the first time it’s ever happened. The following season Barrie was signed by the Edmonton Oilers to a three-year, $13.5 million contract.
But once again Barrie, along with Reid Schaefer, a 2023 1st-round pick and a 2024 4th-round pick, was traded by the Oilers to the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenceman Mattias Ekholm and a 2023 6th-round pick. Tyson Barrie finished his contract out with the Nashville Predators, playing 41 games with the team last season and tallying on goal and 15 points and also played in the playoffs where they lost to the Vancouver Canucks in the first round.
