Calgary Flames Continue To Prove They Are For Real

The Calgary Flames are red hot coming into this year’s new NHL season. They are 5-1-1 and in first place in the Pacific Division. Head Coach Ryan Huska replaced Darryl Sutter when the Flames missed the 2023 playoffs. Since the red-hot start from the Flames, the question is are they for real this season? Will they make the playoffs in the tough Pacific Division they are in?

Calgary Flames Proving Themselves This Year

The Calgary Flames are proving that they might just be for real this year in this new NHL season. The Calgary Flames played Eastern Conference team Carolina Hurricanes Thursday night but fell short of making the comeback. The Flames lost 4-2 giving them their first regulation loss of the season. The Flames are now 5-1-1 on the season and will look ahead to the next game against Winnipeg on Saturday night. Each of the Flames’ five victories has been unique, from the wild comeback in Vancouver to shutting down Edmonton, and a shootout win two nights ago against Pittsburgh.

Head Coach Ryan Huska believes that these wins “build character” and give the Flames the feeling that they can do this. “We have to be more consistent with our play, but we’re finding ways to win, so it builds a little bit of belief.” Goaltenders Dustin Wolf and Dan Vladar Each netminder has gotten three starts, “When you look at our record, you have to look at our goaltenders as a big reason as to why we’re sitting where we are,” said Huska.

Calgary’s Season Outlook

The Calgary Flames have the potential this season to make a run for the playoffs. The NHL season is still very young and has a long way to go to see if the Flames can continue to be dominant in their tough Pacific Division. Mostly, all the teams in their division have made the playoffs recently. Head coach Ryan Huska will need his team to stay the course and keep disciplined throughout the season.

The Calgary Flames will also have Yegor Sharangovich back and Samuel Honzek who participated in practice this week. Sharangovich was expected to be a top offensive contributor for the Flames. Sharangovich was the team-leading scorer with 31 goals in 82 games last season. Once he can return, fans should expect to see him in a top-six role.

Final Thoughts

Despite, the loss against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night the Calgary Flames are still a confident team. As in all NHL games, it’s hard to make a comeback after being down in games. The Flames are still off to a hot start this season, they will look to build upon their mistakes Thursday night and move to Saturday afternoon’s game against the Jets. The Flames are on a three-game homestand playing the Penguins, Hurricanes, and Jets. All teams that will give the Flames a real test to see if they can hang with the tight Pacific Division teams.
