Caleb Williams has been the presumed number-one overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft for a while. The Chicago Bears have not made it a secret what their plans are for the number one overall pick. His play on the field speaks for itself. While there are always things to work on, there is little doubt about his abilities on the field. However, some people have concerns about his locker room presence.
Caleb Williams: 2024 NFL Draft Concerns
Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reported that he talked to one NFL coach who had concerns about how Caleb Williams could command a locker room.
“I like Caleb as a player, but the locker room part of it concerns me. I don’t know him from a can of paint, but what I’ve heard and what I’ve seen from watching interviews, he’s going to have to understand the difference in where he’s at and how he’s been treated to being the quarterback in an NFL locker room.”
The NFL is different. Whether a quarterback likes it or not, they are seen as a leader of the team. If Williams isn’t able to adapt to the NFL, this head coach believes he could struggle.
Russell Wilson Vibes
Another offensive assistant said that Caleb Williams can give off Russell Wilson vibes. The internet loves to make fun of Wilson for his antics. Whether it is his pregame rituals or his plane workouts, people have pointed out his lack of self-awareness.
“Nobody is saying straight-up negative things (about Williams). You kinda have to decode the compliments and there is enough you see that concerns you. After the game, everybody else is shaking hands and you’re seated on the bench by yourself.
You can be a superstar player on a team and have all your side stuff, and then you’re going down that Russell Wilson path, where you’re gonna have your own team and your own this and that. I just hear there’s a lot going on.”
Caleb Williams is one of the first quarterbacks to be a bonafide star before entering the NFL. He appeared in Wendy’s commercials and had multiple lucrative NIL deals in college. Coaches seem concerned about his adjustment to the league.
Lots Of Noise
Welcome to the week before the draft. This is the type of analysis that doesn’t hold much weight when you break it down. Both of the quotes above were from coaches who admitted this was not from any interaction they had with the USC quarterback. It was solely based on studying interviews and other interactions. They are attempting to play psychologist from afar.
Anyone is entitled to their opinion, but this seems like noise ahead of the draft. Caleb Williams has done a great job at tuning all of this out and focusing on football. All signs point to him being a successful quarterback in the NFL but only time will tell.
