Caleb Plant showcased his elite-level skills and experience to score a late stoppage victory over Trevor McCumby on Saturday night. Plant was second in his turn to fight, except for two bouts, against Canelo Alvarez who then stepped into the main event with the latter in a thrilling title fight to win the WBA Interim super-middleweight belt. The fight was stopped by referee Allen Huggins at 2:59 of the ninth round when McCumby continued to take heavy blows on the head and body.
Early Struggles for Caleb Plant
Trevor McCumby, who appeared raw in previous fights, looked sharper in this fight. He displayed greater patience, improved footwork, and showcased his physical strength. In the third round, McCumby landed a solid right hand followed by a left hook that briefly wobbled Caleb Plant. Although he smiled and shook his head, McCumby proves that he gave thought time to the champion boxer.
The third round saw McCumby increase the pressure on him, and at one point made the latter kneel on the canvas. But according to the referee Huggins it was a ‘No Knockdown. ’ The underdog’s fast footwork enabled him to get close to him more than surprisingly. This strategy bore fruits in the fourth round whereby he was knocked down legally for the first time in the fight by a left hook that landed on his arm. He resorted to counting Huggins, and the latter knocked out Caleb Plant, and the two parted.
CalebPlant Takes Control
Caleb Plant changed his strategy and came back into the game. After that, he began to apply pressure to McCumby forcing him back into the corner of the ropes. Things reached a rhythm for “Sweethands” who landed a few more hooks to the head and punches to the midsection that seemed to trouble McCumby. In the seventh round, McCumby’s right eye swelled up and was also bleeding this slightly tilted the odds in favor of him.
As such, from that specific moment, he was dominating the fight and, continuously, putting constant pressure on McCumby, he was pinned back to the ropes several times where he also got big hooks to the head and body section. Even though McCumby was a consistent grinder, he could not hold the following fight up to the end as Caleb Plant landed damaging punches in the ninth round that saw the match called off due to Caleb’s aggressive onslaught. McCumby who had not been defeated in his previous fights was defeated, his record stands at 28-1-0 (21 KOs), while Plant who fought on the receiving end of the KO has a record of 23-2-0 (14 KOs).
