Caitlin Clark Sets Another WNBA Record in Thrilling 8-Point Loss to Wings

Caitlin Clark continues to prove that she is the best prospect in WNBA history. In just the 26th game of her rookie season, the 22-year-old has set another record with the most assists in a single game by any player in league history.

Clark and the Fever shared the court with the Dallas Wings on July 17 as the final game in the WNBA before the traditional four-week break for the 2024 Paris Olympic games. The game was their fourth in the last eight days and second straight on the road.

Caitlin Clark Sets WNBA Single-Game Assist Record

Just as conversations began to heat up with analysts debating on whether Caitlin Clark or Angel Reese deserves to be the WNBA Rookie of the Year, the Indiana Fever point guard may have separated herself from that narrative. In a thrilling eight-point loss to the Dallas Wings on July 17, Clark set the new WNBA single-game record with a career-high 19 assists.

Clark accounted for 19 of the team’s 26 total assists, an absurd 73 percent. The breakout game will only add to her already sky-high season assist percentage of 60. The rookie also leads the WNBA in assists with 8.2 per contest entering the game against Dallas.

To round out her mind-boggling performance, Clark put up 24 points and six rebounds on 10-for-19 from the field including 2-for-9 from three. After a rough start to the season, Clark has now put together three 20-point, 10-assist games in her last four outings.

Another Highlight-Reel Game for Caitlin Clark

The Indiana Fever were unable to top the Dallas Wings on July 17 but Caitlin Clark stole the show even in a loss. While Clark remains the most popular player in the league for a good reason, the Iowa graduate provided more highlight-reel moments to inevitably go viral in the game.

In one of her most impressive moments of the game, Clark dropped another behind-the-back assist in transition during the third quarter to NaLyssa Smith to cut the lead to three. The move has quickly become her signature, as the flashy assist to Smith was her second attempt at the technique after setting up Aliyah Boston with the same tactic in traffic, though the center would get fouled and miss the layup.

A Much Deserved Rest

After putting on a career performance against Dallas, Caitlin Clark will get a much-needed break from basketball for the first time in nearly a full calendar year. In the 2023-2024 NCAA season, Clark led Iowa to their second consecutive National Championship game and was selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA draft eight days later.

From there, Clark has been a relentless machine, playing in all 26 games for the Fever thus far and averaging 35 minutes a contest. In the last month alone, Clark has played 37 or more minutes in 10 games, including two in which she was on the court for all 40 minutes. Clark’s record-setting performance against the Wings was her third occasion in 2024 playing the entire game.

The ESPN broadcast for the game noted that Clark admitted to being tired from her nonstop usage but felt strange about not playing basketball for such a long period, something she is not used to.

Next Game

For the rest of July, the WNBA will be out of action to allow its players to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Clark was notably left off the Team USA roster but will be a part of the WNBA All-Star Weekend.

The 2024 WNBA All-Star game will feature Team USA playing against ‘Team WNBA,’ which consists of the top players in the league who are not on any Olympic roster. Clark, along with fellow rookie Angel Reese, was named as an All-Star for Team WNBA.

The WNBA All-Star Game will commence on July 20 in Phoenix. Clark will next take the court for the Indiana Fever on Aug. 16 at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse against the Phoenix Mercury.
