On Monday evening at Unipol Domus, Cagliari and newly promoted Como will be looking for their first Serie A win of the season. Cagliari have a chance to remain unbeaten in their first two Serie A matches for the first time since 2011, with another home game ahead. It has been 42 years since Como last faced Cag in the top flight.
Como mostly played in lower leagues since then. Their primary goal this season is to maintain their Serie A status. Returning to the league after two decades, Como is under the guidance of head coach Cesc Fabregas, supported by wealthy owners. They have strengthened their squad with notable signings like Raphael Varane, Pepe Reina, and Sergi Roberto.

Cagliari earned a goalless draw against Roma in their opening match, while Como was defeated 3-0 by Juventus in their top-flight return. The team’s new manager, Davide Nicola, has started his tenure with a draw and a Coppa Italia win, following in the footsteps of beloved former manager Claudio Ranieri.
The Rossoblu began with two home fixtures, first winning their Coppa Italia tie against Carrarese and then holding Roma to a 0-0 draw. Despite Roberto Piccoli not scoring in his league debut, keeping a clean sheet against a strong team like Roma is a promising start for Nicola.
Como’s early season has been challenging, including a penalty shootout loss to Sampdoria in the Coppa Italia and a heavy defeat to Juventus. Como have historically struggled in their first two matches of the Serie A season, failing to win in all ten previous seasons dating back to 1951.
Team News
Cagliari may have a full squad available, with Colombian center-back Yerry Mina back from suspension and Nadir Zortea possibly fit after missing the opener. Even if Zortea is available, Paulo Azzi is expected to continue on the right flank, with Tommaso Augello on the left.
Zito Luvumbo, who was involved in more goals than any other Cagliari player last season, will partner with Roberto Piccoli up front. Luvumbo faces Como, where he made his first league appearance in Italy in September 2021.
Como’s attack will be led by Andrea Belotti, who has a strong record against Cagliari with eight goals in Serie A encounters. Alberto Dossena, who also returns to face his former club, was a top performer in clearances last season, though Daniele Baselli might miss out due to a thigh injury. Raphael Varane will not be available due to a knee injury, but Alessio Iovine is back after serving a suspension.
Cagliari vs. Como: Predicted Line-ups
Cagliari possible starting lineup: Scuffet; Zappa, Mina, Luperto; Azzi, Marin, Prati, Deiola, Augello; Luvumbo, Piccoli
Como possible starting lineup: Reina; Iovine, Goldaniga, Dossena, Moreno; Braunoder, Engelhardt; Strefezza, Cutrone, Da Cunha; Belotti
