Are you ready for some football? The last week without football has come and gone! We are officially starting the best time of the year. Football season. A time when men put in their notices to their wives that they will be busy for twelve hours on Saturdays and Sundays. The Buffalo Bills kick off their 2024 season at home against the Arizona Cardinals. Here is our game preview of week one of the regular season for the Bills.
Offseason Additions:
Josh Allen has been busy this offseason rehearsing his new handshakes with the wide receivers he will be throwing the ball to. Florida State University standout WR/PR Keon Coleman was drafted to the franchise with their second round pick, while Mack Hollins and Marquez Valdes-Scantling were the veterans added to the wide receiver room. Safeties Mike Edwards and second-round pick Cole Bishop were added to the secondary after the departure of seven-year starters Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde. Overall, the Bills have over 40% turnover of their roster from last season.
Offseason Losses:
The Buffalo Bills enter the 2024 season with a plethora of changes from their 2023 roster. Leadership is the biggest characteristic missing from this season’s Buffalo Bills, as team captains WR Stefon Diggs, WR Gabe Davis, C Mitch Morse, and S Jordan Poyer, along with CB Tre’Davious White, all departed the Bills in free agency. The franchise was strapped on their salary cap after making free agency splashes the previous few years. Losing players with so much experience and leadership hurts a franchise that is in strong spirits to capture their first Super Bowl in the team’s history.
Key players to watch for the Buffalo Bills:
QB Kyle Murray
After missing the first nine games of the 2023 season due to a non-contact knee injury, QB Kyler Murray is healthy and has new weapons. The Cardinals used the 4th selection in the 2024 NFL draft to select WR Marvin Harrison Jr. out of Ohio State University. Murray has been missing top-tier talent on offense since the team released DeAndre Hopkins in 2023. The last time the Bills and Cardinals met was the infamous “Hail Murray” game. The Bills are going to have to put pressure on Murray and not allow him to scramble outside of the tackles.
Trey McBride
One of the hottest tight ends to draft in fantasy football this offseason, McBride is poised to take control of the offense. His 2023 season came as somewhat of a surprise. He had 81 receptions for 825 yards and 3 touchdowns. With LB Matt Milano out for an extended period of time, it will be up to CB Taron Johnson and S Damar Hamlin to prevent McBride from taking over the game.
Final Thoughts:
The Buffalo Bills must start off hot by protecting QB Josh Allen and establishing the line of scrimmage on offense, while containing QB Kyler Murray on defense. The defense of the Bills must put pressure on Murray and allow third and longs.
