Next Man Up: Buffalo Bills Dynamic LB #42 Dorian Williams

Buffalo Bills Dorian Williams

Next man up. You hear this terminology for ample amounts of time from coaches in the NFL. When the news came of All-Pro LB Matt Milano and defensive captain Terrel Bernard both being out, the term used was such.

Milano went down early in training camp after tearing his bicep on a routine tackling exercise. The veteran linebacker had just recovered from a season-ending leg injury. The injury happened while attempting to make a tackle during individual drills. The question many outside of the Bills organization ask is who will be the “next man up” for the Bills in the linebacker room.

This is not a situation that Dorian Williams is unfamiliar with. The former Tulane LB got the call that he would be starting next to Terrell Bernard after the Buffalo Bills’ Week 5 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. History repeats itself as the franchise is poised to task Williams with replacing Milano against the Jacksonville Jaguars again this season. Williams is coming off of a terrific game against the Miami Dolphins. He recorded ten tackles in the game and continuously wreaked havoc in the backfield of opponents.

Williams was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft out of Tulane. As a rookie, Williams recorded forty tackles and a pass breakup. The undersized linebacker does an excellent job shooting the gaps of opposing offenses. He constantly gets into the backfield and captures opposing players in the backfield. Replicating his 2023 performance will be important for Williams if the Buffalo Bills want to keep their four-year streak of winning the AFC East.

Final Thoughts

Buffalo’s defense is decimated with injuries to keep players such as Matt Milano, Terrel Bernard, and Taron Johnson. While the defense of the Bills has done a remarkable job containing opponents and locking up opposing wide receivers, the Bills mafia has to worry about a letdown from the franchise. The team is playing with renewed energy, thanks in part to the team allowing DC Bobby Babich to serve as their defensive play-caller this season. The team made adjustments in the second half of Buffalo’s week one victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Those adjustments were vital for the team to decimate the Miami Dolphins on Thursday night football.

The team will take on the Jacksonville Jaguars next Monday, September 23rd, on ESPN. Having players who missed extended periods over the last few seasons for the Buffalo Bills has allowed their younger talent a chance to see the field and get experience for when the next opportunity arises for them to step in.
