Bryson DeChambeau is one of many big-name golfers who have a shot to win the PGA Championship on Sunday. Early on in his career, the young golfer rubbed some people the wrong way. He was a little rough around the edges, and that upset some of the older, more proper fans of the sport. However, his popularity has increased over the past few years. DeChambeau credits YouTube for being the catalyst for his increased popularity.
Bryson DeChambeau Credits YouTube For Popularity
Bryson DeChambeau has used his YouTube channel to showcase his personality. This is something many athletes are doing. Many athletes across all sports have podcasts, YouTube shows, or other social media bits to give fans a more complete view of who they are. DeChambeau’s channel has over 600k subscribers, and his most popular videos are his “Break 50 series.” In this run of videos, he attempts to break 50 on easier courses.
“I’ve worked really hard to have people help hopefully understand who I am a little bit better. YouTube has been a great platform to help that out.
“The Break 50 series is a lot of fun. I love doing it. It’s a lot of fun. It’s a challenge that’s never been done nor accomplished without any strokes. So it just keeps my brain fresh and in an entertainment mode, and realizing what the game is all about, not just for myself and winning money or winning trophies but entertaining, as well.
“Obviously we all want to win trophies. But being able to entertain the fans is what we’re all here to do, and I think that’s what’s the most important thing.”
In other videos, he does trick shots or a challenge given to him. These videos show the fun side of Bryson DeChambeau. When we see them in tournaments, they are locked in. Money, sponsorships, and legacies are on the line. They have to be laser-focused. What is fun about the YouTube channel is that it provides a low-pressure situation for DeChambeau to have fun with.
Helping The Sport Of Golf
Outside of just helping his popularity, Bryson DeChambeau’s YouTube channel is good for the sport of golf. As the sun sets on the career of Tiger Woods, golf is looking for the next big draw. Scottie Scheffler is doing his best, Woods impression, but the sport needs a group of players people will flock to come see. This content makes a connection with fans. If you watch the tournaments, the roars around DeChambeau’s shots are a little louder than the rest.
More players should look to build their brand this way. The YouTube channel has not only helped the popularity of Bryson DeChambeau but also the sport. As evolutions in the sport continue to happen, expect more golfers to show off their fun side to the fans in an attempt to make a connection.
