Browns Release QB Tyler Huntley

Browns

In a stunning plot twist that will leave football fans talking nonstop, the Cleveland Browns parted ways with Quarterback Tyler Huntley. It came just as the team prepares for their 2024 opening season matchup with the Dallas Cowboys. The move underlined the team’s ever-evolving strategy and the high level of competition within their quarterback room.

Free agent addition Huntley in March was signed by the Browns to pad out their quarterback numbers, but a run of injuries had the Browns seeking as many bodies as possible last season. His stay in Cleveland lasted all of one month. His release frees up a fascinating new chapter for team and player alike.

No question, the star of the quarterback competition was Dorian Thompson-Robinson. He is the second-year QB who amazed in camp and preseason games with the skills that set him apart from Huntley. More impressively, Thompson-Robinson bounced back from a serious hip injury last year. His preseason, including a three-touchdown game, had already secured him a spot on the roster.

Financial Flexibility and Roster Adjustments

Watson, Winston, and Thompson-Robinson are the remaining quarterbacks. Without Huntley, the Browns are expected to enter the new season with three quarterbacks: Deshaun Watson, Jameis Winston, and Dorian Thompson-Robinson. The newly-signed Watson will indeed be the linchpin for the Browns, as he leads this team from the quarterback position. Winston has been a major experienced starter of games, thus providing them with a good backup, while Thompson-Robinson is young, resilient, and full of promise as their interesting third option.

Other than shuffling quarterbacks, the Browns have also moved to adjust their financial commitments. The club restructured Watson’s contract, converting a sizeable portion of his base salary into a signing bonus. This not only helps alleviate some of the immediate salary cap pressures but also shows the aggressiveness the team has taken in managing their finances.

The Return of D’Onta Foreman

With the roster spot having opened up due to the departure of Huntley, the Browns did a wise thing by re-signing veteran Running Back Donta Foreman. At least in the short term, this is a nice return, with some mystery surrounding star Running Back Nick Chubb as he works his way through knee surgery. The team did have a minor scare with Foreman in training camp, but he demonstrated his worth by scoring a touchdown in the last preseason game.

Meanwhile, roster changes prove that the Browns continue to fortify their rosters in advance of the September 8 season opener against the Cowboys. Moving away from Tyler Huntley was a surprise, but just goes to show how competitive the NFL is, though the Browns want a roster to be able to contend at the very best level. These changes will be followed with keen interest by fans and analysts alike to ascertain how they will reflect in the performance of the team during the season.
