Former West Indian cricketer and captain, Brian Lara, has come out to lend his support to India’s opening batsmen, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, especially since there seems to be so much said about the latter throughout this T20 World Cup 2024. Relentless critics who think that there is a need to change the anticipated batting order for the Windies are something that Brian Lara deems unnecessary.
Struggles of India’s Openers

India’s display in the T20 World Cup has been severely criticized, and that applies to the team’s choice of openers. Virat Kohli, a batsman who has failed to impress for the past three matches, has scored only five runs and four came against Pakistan.
His worst performance came in the third match of the Super Eight, playing against the United States of America, where he was caught in the slips for a duck. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma had a decent start with fifty-plus innings against Ireland, but he could not repeat such form in the next games, where he scored only 13 against Pakistan and only three against the USA.
Brian Lara’s Support for Stability

Nonetheless, despite all these setbacks, Brian Lara has encouraged India to maintain the formation of the opening two batsmen. Lara hinted that having Sharma and Kohli on the team is a good combination and perhaps, the management may not need to tinker with the team.
They must support both of them [Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma]. I am sure that at some point in time they are going to perform well with those conditions because the batting conditions in the USA were not perhaps the very best,” mentioning Hindustan Times, Brian Lara.
You must stick with those players with experience recorded in the previous games, that is according to Brian Lara. He admitted that India had the chance to go in with a left-right opening combination, but opted for twosetters, the best two batsmen in the side. Sure, India had an opportunity to unleash a left-right opening combination.
They took two brilliant players, two lads who have worked well for India with the bat for their franchise as well in terms of the captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. I think they’ve got to stick with it,” he added.
Potential Impact of Changes
Brian Lara also highlighted the potential negative impact of moving Kohli down the order. He suggested that altering the batting lineup could disrupt the team’s dynamics. “If you do make changes on top, Virat Kohli has to come in the order a little bit lower and that’s going to upset things there,” Lara noted.
