Detroit Lions’ Brian Branch Wins NFC Defensive Player of the Week

Detroit Lions, Brian Branch

The Detroit Lions manhandled the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday 47-9, and one huge contributor, Brian Branch, is being praised for his performance. Branch was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week for week 6. The second-year defensive back has had an impressive season and is a deserving earner of the award. Branch and the Lions moved to 4-1 after the win in Dallas.

Brian Branch Key in Win Against Dallas

Detroit traveled down to Dallas to give the Cowboys a certified butt-whooping. Brian Branch anchored the defense, becoming the NFC Defensive Player of the Week. Branch had 6 total tackles, a forced fumble, and 2 interceptions on quarterback Dak Prescott. One of the two interceptions for Branch also saved a touchdown, with Branch picking it off in the end zone. Branch joins teammates quarterback Jared Goff, and punter Jack Fox, the third Lions player this season to win a player of the week award in their respective position. Brian Branch is in the second year of his young career and is starting to blossom into a Lions cornerstone player on defense. Branch wins the award after fellow Lions, Aidan Hutchinson was named NFC Defensive Player of September.

Brian Branch not only got his 2nd and 3rd interceptions of the season, teammate Kerby Joseph added his 4th. Both players are at the top of the league in interceptions. Could Detroit have their own “no-fly zone?” Every game Branch, Joseph, and Terrion Arnold are getting better. This young core of defensive backs could be the next version of the “Legion of Boom” if they can manage to stay healthy. Alim McNeill also added 2 sacks in the team’s dominating win.

Player’s Career

The Detroit Lions were ecstatic when safety Brian Branch from Alabama dropped to them in the 2023 NFL Draft. Branch was regarded as one of the best defenders coming out of college, expecting to go in the 1st round. When Branch was available at 45 for the Lions to select, Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell couldn’t pass on the talented safety. Brian Branch has been a starter for the Detroit Lions defense since day 1, even intercepting league MVP Patrick Mahomes in his first NFL game. By the way, that interception went back for 6, what a debut by the then-rookie.

Brian Branch had 2 interceptions on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys increasing his season total of 3 so far. Branch had 3 picks in his rookie season, so this sets him on pace to have a new career high in his sophomore campaign. The Lions’ young core of stars should be the foundation of Detroit for years to come.

Final Thoughts

By now everyone knows about the Aidan Hutchinson injury suffered on Sunday. This is a huge blow to the Lions but let’s not get distracted on what this team did on Sunday. The Lions gave Jerry Jones a birthday gift of a good old-fashioned spanking. Brian Branch and the defense will have to step up their game even further with the loss of Hutch, but for now, let’s congratulate Branch on winning the Week 6 NFC Player of the Week.
