Brentford and Southampton Preview

After securing victories in their respective EFL Cup second-round matches, Brentford and Southampton will look to settle their Premier League issues when they meet at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday.

As Brentford prepares for a challenging September, including games against Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Leyton Orient in the EFL Cup, they aim to secure back-to-back Premier League home wins for the first time since November 2023. They have been impressive at home against newly-promoted teams, winning seven straight games with multiple goals in each.

Brentford won against Colchester United after losing to Liverpool, while Southampton bounced back from their defeat to Nottingham Forest with a dramatic 6-2 win over Cardiff City. Brentford’s promising start to the Premier League season was halted by a 3-0 loss to Liverpool, despite a strong defensive display that limited Liverpool’s chances. They managed to narrowly avoid a cup upset against Colchester, with Keane Lewis-Potter’s goal proving decisive and a penalty save from Hakon Valdimarsson ensuring their progression.

Southampton, meanwhile, has only conceded twice in their first two league matches, but those goals have resulted in losses to Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United. Their EFL Cup match against Cardiff City was a high-scoring affair, with Southampton eventually winning 4-3 after a dramatic finish.

Southampton’s primary goal is to earn their first Premier League points of the season. Historically, they have struggled against Brentford, failing to win or score in their last three encounters. They have lost the matches by an aggregate score of 8-0 since their opening Premier League win against Brentford.

Team News and Possible Starting Line-ups

Brentford’s striker Ivan Toney, who is set for a £40m move to Al-Ahli, will not be featured. However, Brentford has bolstered their attack with Gustavo Nunes from Gremio, and Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo are expected to lead the line. Brentford will be missing Igor Thiago, Rico Henry, Aaron Hickey, and Josh Dasilva due to injuries, but Valdimarsson’s penalty heroics in the cup are unlikely to keep Mark Flekken out of the starting role.

Southampton have recently signed Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale for £25m, who might make his debut as Gavin Bazunu is sidelined with an Achilles injury until early 2025. Alex McCarthy, who performed well despite the loss to Forest, remains a reliable option. Ross Stewart is still recovering and may not be fit for this match, but Kamaldeen Sulemana is back from an ankle injury and could offer an attacking alternative.

Brentford possible starting lineup: Flekken; Roerslev, Collins, Pinnock, Ajer; Norgaard, Janelt, Jensen; Mbeumo, Wissa, Lewis-Potter

Southampton possible starting lineup: Ramsdale; Stephens, Bednarek, Harwood-Bellis; Sugawara, Fernandes, Smallbone, Downes, Walker-Peters; Brereton Diaz, Archer
