The National Hockey League announced the Utah Hockey Club a few hours before the start of Game 3 of the 2024 NHL Stanley Cup Finals. With the paperwork officially filed with the league, Smith Entertainment Group officially takes ownership of the former Arizona-based franchise for the upcoming league year and beyond.
Following last season as the Arizona Coyotes, Utah Hockey Club holds the 6th overall selection in the NHL entry draft at the end of this month that will take place at the Sphere in Las Vegas between June 28-29.

The colors for the Utah Hockey Club franchise are officially listed as Rock Black, Salt White, and Mountain Blue. The Rock Black color symbolizes the “darkness of night in the mountains and the volcanic rock of Utah’s deserts”. The Salt White is intended for “snow on Utah’s peaks and the famous salt flats”, and the Mountain Blue is a “ representation of Utah’s rich winter sports history and its clear skies for more than 230 days a year”.
According to the NHL website, there was an intentional effort to align with another sports team under the Smith Entertainment Group umbrella in the area, the NBA’s, Utah Jazz:
The distinctive colors will establish the cornerstone of the club’s brand as it evolves through the team’s name selection ahead of the 2025-26 NHL season. The selected color palette for Utah’s first NHL team is also intentionally complementary to that of the Utah Jazz — also owned by SEG — whose expanded colors were introduced last week and include a similar Sky Blue as a tertiary color.
The Utah Hockey Club is expected to play at the home of the Jazz, the Delta Center.
