According to a Stanford Cardinal team announcement, one of the best contributors to the game of basketball will be leaving the ranks.
It has been one of the better careers in college sports and sports in general. It’s odd waking up one day and realizing that someone who you have grown accustomed to seeing on the sidelines will no longer be a part of your March or winter Saturday evenings. But as the door closes on the final chapter, this provides a moment to look at everything that this individual was able to accomplish in her career.
How do you think she will be remembered when we look back on her basketball tenure?
Over Three Decades, A Stanford Cardinal No More
Tara VanDerveer will no longer be a Stanford Cardinal. As mentioned, the team issued an announcement late Tuesday that the basketball coach has decided to hang it up at the age of 70. VanDevere leaves as the single-winningest basketball coach in the NCAA. She sets the mark at 1,216 wins over her career. However, even saying that you will no longer be a Cardinal feels strange and doesn’t seem fitting.

She is someone who is synonymous with not just the program but the school itself. Fitting with the same approach that has gotten her to this point, the university announced that she will continue to work with the school, but understandably, it will be less hands-on and more as an advisor. It seems that even in retirement, she simply can’t stay away from the game and academic institution that she loves.
Seasons Of Success As A Stanford Cardinal
VanDerveer was not always on the staff as a Stanford Cardinal. Additionally, her previous head coaching experiences from 1978 to 1985 included stops at Idaho and Ohio State. When you throw in a brief stint with the US national team, you can start to see why her body of work encompasses a life of dedication to the game of basketball in general and not just Stanford. But VanDerveer and Stanford remain synonymous. She’s someone who enjoys the fundamentals and teaching aspects of coaching.
The long-time coach put in a lot of hard work to improve young athletes’s lives. At this time, it’s not known what her exact new rule will be on campus, but anyone can rest assured that, however vague or general the description may seem now, it will likely involve her being at the very least the most active person in retirement in the nation as a Stanford Cardinal.
