The New England Patriots made a shocking decision as after just one year as coach, they have fired Jerod Mayo. The team finished last in the AFC East with a 4-13 record and are currently slated to have the fourth pick in the 2025 NFL draft. The team could not get much going on either side of the football and became the fourth team this season to officially be in the hunt for a new head coach. Let’s take a closer look at what is happening and discuss what is next for the New England Patriots.
New England Patriots Looking for New Coach
The New England Patriots did not have a good first season of quarterback Drake Maye and the new-look team after moving on from Bill Belichick last offseason. Instead, the team finished 4-13 and were one of the most unimpressive teams in the sport throughout the season. The Pats finished last in passing yards per game (172.6), 30th in scoring (16.6), and 25th in scoring defense (25.1). This news comes after it was reported that Jerod Mayo’s job was safe a few weeks ago.
There are likely going to be a lot of coaches that are going to be interested as there are a lot of things in place, including a solid ownership with a winning pedigree. Owner Robert Kraft issued a statement to announce the news.
“After the game today, I informed Jerod Mayo that he will not be returning as the head coach of the New England Patriots in 2025. For me, personally, this was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made… I am grateful for Jerod’s many contributions to the New England Patriots throughout his career and will always be rooting for his success. I appreciate all his hard work and hope the experiences gained will help him in the future, as I still believe he wil be a successful head coach in this league. I wish Jerod and his family nothing but success in the future.”
The New England Patriots will be a team that could draw a lot of eyeballs with more than $130 million projected in salary cap this offseason, a high draft pick, and nine total picks at their disposal. There is room for immediate improvement but it will be interesting to see who the team is going to target in their NFL coaching search.
