The Minnesota Vikings have been in discussions with Justin Jefferson for over a year now on a new contract. His numbers were historic in his first three years, and a massive contract was likely. However, there had been rumblings the Vikings were looking to trade their star receiver rather than paying him. They squashed those rumors today when they signed Jefferson to a historic contract.

The Minnesota Vikings signed Justin Jefferson to a four-year, $140 million contract. $110 million of the deal is guaranteed. This deal dwarfs any of the wide receiver extensions that were signed this offseason but also resets the market for non-quarterbacks. With an annual salary of $35 million, he beats out Nick Bosa as the highest-paid non-quarterback.
The former LSU receiver was the first to announce the deal. He posted on social media, “the deal I have been waiting for since I was a little kid.” While rumors swirled, the team made it clear that they did not have plans to trade Justin Jefferson and were simply working out the details of the contract.
A Worthy Investment
It isn’t hard to see why the Minnesota Vikings are forking over this kind of money. Justin Jefferson is one of five players to surpass 5,000 career receiving yards in his first four seasons. He also has a career average of 98.3 receiving yards per game, which is the best in NFL history. Despite being the focal point of every defense, he consistently gets open and makes big plays.
The Minnesota Vikings hope rookie quarterback JJ McCarthy can be the quarterback of the future. He definitely has the weapons around him to be successful. If the Vikings hit on the most important position in football, they could compete in the NFC North quicker than many people predicted.
