Atlanta Braves Third Baseman Out For 6-8 Weeks With Hand Injury

Atlanta Braves Third Baseman, Austin Riley

The Atlanta Braves (66-58) are seven games back from the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East division. Atlanta just finished their series against the Los Angeles Angels. They won their last game by a score of 3-1. Unfortunately, the injury woes just keep coming for the Braves in 2024.

On Monday, the organization received news that their starting third baseman suffered a right-hand fracture. An MRI determined that Austin Riley will be out of the batting lineup for six to eight weeks. It is said that Riley could miss the rest of the regular season. This is a big blow for the Atlanta Braves baseball team.

In their series finale against the Los Angeles Angels, Austin Riley was hit by a pitch on his right wrist. At first glance, tests came back inconclusive and did not show any negative signs of an injury. Riley has hit 19 home runs on 56 hits and holds a batting average of.256.

The Braves will miss his power and presence on the baseball diamond as he was a vital contributor to scoring runs for the team. Luke Williams came in as a replacement for the starting third baseman after suffering the injury on Sunday.

Atlanta Braves Injuries In 2024

Another injury setback for the Atlanta Braves does not help their chances of making the postseason. Michael Harris II just returned to the team after missing 52 games with a strained left hamstring. Second baseman Ozzie Albies has also been on the injured list due to a left wrist injury, just the opposite of Austin Riley to this point.

Right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr is already missing the entire 2024 season with another torn ACL, the same injury that stopped him from playing back in 2021. These injuries to the Braves star players have limited their hitting numbers so far this season. But, they are not out of playoff contention as winning games has become even more critical.

With 38 games left in the regular season, Atlanta will have to work some magic in the coming weeks. Marcell Ozuna and Matt Olson have to hold down the lineup, but will not be able to do it alone. However, the Braves have added more players as a result of starters and veterans going on the injured reserve list over the last few months.

Braves Newest Additions

Atlanta signed Jorge Soler in a trade from the San Francisco Giants at the end of July. He was a part of the Braves 2021 World Series Championship against the Houston Astros. Soler is getting back into the groove after being away for one season. In other good news, Reynaldo Lopez will make a return to the mound tonight against the Phillies at Truist Park.

Heading into the series with Philadelphia, it will be important for the Braves to pull out some wins. Catching up to the division leaders will solidify a playoff spot as the postseason gets closer. It will not be an easy task with their rival losing its last game on Sunday in Washington.

Since Austin Riley will be out for six to eight weeks, Atlanta and Gio Urshela have recently signed a deal after getting released from the Detroit Tigers on August 16. The opportunity is now for Atlanta to make a push for the postseason. Fans could see Riley back on the field in October if the recovery process goes well for the veteran third baseman.
