San Francisco 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk Restart Contract Negotiations

It’s been a crazy offseason for the San Francisco 49ers and star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. The drama is coming to a thrilling conclusion soon. A report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz broke Friday afternoon, revealed the two sides had returned to the negotiating table. This comes after the 49ers had been engaging in trade talks with numerous teams this week. This is a major development for both parties as Aiyuk seeks a massive extension.

A key development is that two of the teams wanting to trade for Aiyuk have backed off. The New England Patriots had sought to bring in Aiyuk with a sign and trade, allegedly offering $30 million for his services. Aiyuk did not wish to go to New England so they decided to back off of trying to acquire him.

The newest development is that the Cleveland Browns had been heavily interested in Aiyuk but are now unlikely to acquire him in a trade. That eliminates two of the major potential landing spots and makes a new deal much more likely for the two sides. There are still other potential trade partners if talks break down once again, such as the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Commanders.

A Step In the Right Direction

After an offseason filled with ups and downs, this is a massive step forward for both the San Francisco 49ers and Aiyuk. He’s been rumored to be shipped out to anywhere from Las Vegas to Washington and everywhere in between. Re-engaging in talks allowed the two sides to meet and discuss “candid and open thoughts.”

Aiyuk was obviously frustrated at not being offered what he felt was a competitive offer. The San Francisco 49ers, for their part, are up against the cap and need to resign holdout Trent Williams as well. This may help end an offseason of drama that was kicked off by Aiyuk demanding a trade after talks fell through initially.

Aiyuk Seeks Major Extension

One of the key factors hanging up this deal is that Aiyuk is seeking close to $30 million per season. This would put him in the elite territory as far as salaries go. Currently, Justin Jefferson is the highest-paid wide receiver at $35 million per season. It should be noted that Ceedee Lamb of the Dallas Cowboys is also closely monitoring this situation as he also seeks an extension from the Cowboys.

The San Francisco 49ers are paying several players massive extensions already that have them near the salary cap. They resigned Christian McCaffery this offseason to an extension after he won Offensive Player of the Year as well as the Madden 25 Cover. Deebo Samuel and Nick Bosa also got massive extensions from the San Francisco 49ers after playing hardball tactics that were similar to Aiyuk’s.
