Bournemouth vs. Newcastle United: Preview

On Sunday afternoon, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe will return to familiar territory as his team visits Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium for their second Premier League match of the 2024-25 season.

Newcastle United secured a 1-0 victory over Southampton in their opening game, despite playing with 10 men for much of the match. Bournemouth, on the other hand, managed a late 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest after trailing to a Chris Wood goal, thanks to an equalizer from Antoine Semenyo in the 86th minute.

Bournemouth’s 2023-24 season saw them achieve their highest-ever points total in the Premier League, though their campaign ended with a three-game losing streak. Despite a close call with a fourth straight loss, Semenyo’s late goal prevented this and provided a lift as they returned home for their first Premier League match of the new season.

From November 2023 onward, Bournemouth lost only three home games, with two of those defeats coming against Liverpool and Manchester City. However, their final home match of the season ended in a 2-1 defeat to Brentford. Historically, August has been challenging for Bournemouth, as they have not won any of their last eight Premier League matches during this month.

Newcastle United managed only one goal in their opening game, with Joelinton’s strike being enough to secure a win against Southampton despite a red card for Fabian Schar. This victory allowed Newcastle to break a six-game streak without a clean sheet. A win at Bournemouth could mark their first back-to-back victories at the start of a Premier League season since 1997.

Newcastle United’s away form was high-scoring last season, with 76 goals across 19 away games, but they lost 2-0 to Bournemouth at the Vitality last November. Newcastle has not won in their last four Premier League matches against Bournemouth, with their last victory coming when Howe was Bournemouth’s manager in 2020.

The last time these sides met in February, the match ended up in a draw (2-2). Lately, this clash has taken place 13 times, out of which Newcastle United has won five, five have been draws and Bournemouth has won three.

Bournemouth vs. Newcastle United: Team News

Bournemouth’s squad emerged unscathed from their draw, with new signing Dean Huijsen making his debut. However, Marcos Senesi might return from injury, while Tyler Adams, David Brooks, and Enes Unal remain sidelined. Dominic Solanke has moved to Tottenham, and new signing Evanilson is unlikely to start, so Semenyo will likely lead the attack, coming off a milestone 10 Premier League goals.

For Newcastle United, Schar is serving a three-game suspension, joining Sandro Tonali, who will return to training next week. Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are out with knee injuries, opening the door for Lloyd Kelly to make his Premier League debut against his former team. Callum Wilson is also recovering from a back issue, and Lewis Miley is aiming to return from a metatarsal fracture in October.

Possible Starting Lineups

Bournemouth possible starting lineup: Neto; Smith, Zabarnyi, Huijsen, Kerkez; Cook, Scott; Ouattara, Tavernier, Sinisterra; Semenyo

Newcastle United’s possible starting lineup: Pope; Livramento, Kelly, Burn, Hall; Longstaff, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Murphy, Isak, Gordon
