The Boston Red Sox are in deep waters this late in the season. With injuries, sweeps at home and a bullpen that is barely holding on, the Red Sox are desperate for wins to earn their place in the playoffs. They opened a crucial series in Detroit and came up victorious last night in extra innings. Will Boston continue to make gains in the standings as the regular season dissipates?
Critical Series In Detroit For Boston Red Sox
Alex Cora brought Boston to Detroit as he faced his older brother Joey Cora (Tigers 3rd base coach) for some good old-fashioned brotherly rivalry. The first pitch was a lead-off double for the Red Sox from Jarren Duran to let the Tigers know they wouldn’t go quietly. Triston Casas brought home his 18th RBI in the first inning with a groundout.
Casas was recently under scrutiny from Boston Red Sox fans for his inability to follow what they define as conventional masculinity. His unique style for pregame stretching in the outfield doing various yoga moves with painted nails and a red ski mask, has enraged some Red Sox fans. All the same, they want runs so he did deliver last night, only without the ski mask this time.
Boston Bullpen Showing Small Improvements
Tanner Houck, with his first full-time season for the Boston Red Sox, was able to keep the Tigers at bay last night. Houck is expected to continue to show vast improvements this season, currently at a 3.12 ERA after 27 games pitched. He had a spectacular performance for the Boston Red Sox last night in six innings.
One instrument to success this season will be if Kutter Crawford, Brayan Bello, Nick Pivetta, and Houck can form consecutive wins creating a harmonious rhythm and creating confidence for September. Only time will tell but last night was a solid move in the right direction for the Boston Red Sox bullpen.
Red Hot Rookie Exceeds Expectations

With the game tied 4-4 at the end of the ninth, the Boston Red Sox showed signs of excellent work under pressure walking into extra innings. After almost throwing away a four-run lead, and tanking the game in the eighth, Boston could’ve easily let this one slip through their fingers. Ceddanne Rafaela had just swung and missed at two high fastballs from Shelby Miller with one out in the top of the 10th.
Rafaela, under pressure to perform, smashed his 14th home run. Duran was to follow as the two finished the 10th with back-to-back homers. “I’m still learning every day,” 23-year-old Rafaela says, “We grind to the end.” Rafaela has been a clutch hitter for the Red Sox this season. With a .350 batting average, he has been playing in the big leagues with great fervor.
The clubhouse sees him as showing signs of developing into a heavy hitter with high production value. The more pressure the better for Rafaela as this is not the first time he has shown he can produce when needed most. It may be time for him to shine this season as the Boston Red Sox have found themselves in a pressure cooker walking into September.
Red Sox Need To Keep Performing
With less than 30 games left in the regular season, the Boston Red Sox are only three and a half games out of the wild card position. They face Detroit today with Pivetta taking the mound, will they come out on top? The Orioles took the win against the Rockies yesterday in their first game of the series, while the first-place Yankees took a loss today against the Cardinals.
The end of the regular season will come before you know it and the Red Sox will face the Yankees and Orioles. With a chance to disrupt the AL East in huge ways, the Boston Red Sox must gain traction and set the pace of these upcoming away games. Between the Tigers and the Mets series, they have a solid chance at making up for lost time.
Winning their 70th game yesterday on the road, they are 8.5 games behind the first-place Yankees. To clinch any position this season, our home team has to gain momentum away and bring that confidence home only to win at Fenway, which has been a huge disappointment for Red Sox Nation thus far.
It will be up to the BoSox to claim their winning path in these upcoming series. With the roster extension right around the corner, things could change on a dime for the entire AL East. Eyes will be glued to the games as these next two series may determine whether the magic of the Boston Red Sox has been reignited in the hunt for October.
