There aren’t many superstars left in Beantown these days. Due to the Boston Red Sox salary purges of recent years, the team is relatively low on the star power the team had while winning four World Series from 2004-2018.
As far as household MLB names go, only third baseman Rafael Devers and shortstop Trevor Story are locked in for the foreseeable future. Now, it appears that the Red Sox will be without one of those two for quite a while.
Story, who the Red Sox signed to a six-year, $140 million deal prior to the 2022 season, exited Friday night’s game against the Los Angeles Angels with a left shoulder injury.
Injuries have hampered Story’s time with Red Sox
Story played in just 137 games total over the 2022 and 2023 seasons due to injuries. He could be poised to miss a big chunk of 2024 now as well.
The 31-year-old left Friday’s game in the fourth inning after making a diving stab at a line drive from Angels superstar Mike Trout. Story appeared in obvious pain on the field. He then had to be helped to the dugout by members of the Boston staff.
Scheduled to undergo an MRI on the shoulder, Story told reporters after the game:
“Obviously did something to the shoulder there. Pretty painful. We didn’t get images yet. So we’ll have that tomorrow. I’m not trying to put any words on it yet because we don’t know for sure. So yeah, painful. Just kind of landed on the body weight on the shoulder there.”
Story had a few injury issues before joining Red Sox
Story, a nine-year MLB veteran, was nearly injury-free in six years with the Colorado Rockies. Debuting with 97 games in 2016, Story never played in fewer than 142 games of a full season with Colorado. In 2020, he played in 59 of 60 games of the COVID-shortened campaign.
When healthy, Story is an offensive force. A two-time Silver Slugger honoree, he is hitting .265 with 177 home runs and 534 RBIs for his career.
