On an Instagram post, Jaylen Brown responded to a comment saying, “I want blood”. In the Instagram post, Brown promoted a song he made with rapper A$AP Ferg called Just Do It. The post included pictures of Brown in the studio and behind the scenes of creating the song. On the post, a user commented, “JB villain year loading…” Brown replied, “I want blood,” which has sparked excitement and conversation around his mentality heading into the 2024-25 season.
Jaylen Brown’s Summer
Brown’s summer has been full of ups and downs. Despite the Boston Celtics winning the NBA Championship and Brown being named the Finals MVP, things are not all positive. Her was not invited to participate with Team USA in the Summer Olympics, while teammates Jayson Tatum, Jrue Holiday, and Derrick White were all on the team. Many saw this as a snub, believing an All-Star and Finals MVP deserved a spot on the team.
Also, Celtic teammate Tatum was on the bench for multiple Olympic games. Despite being viewed as one of the better players on the team, Coach Steve Kerr rarely gave him significant minutes, and there were some games where he didn’t play at all. Team USA is always full of talented players, and some will inevitably be shortchanged with minutes. However, with Brown not being invited, and Tatum sitting on the bench, Celtics fans have plenty of reason to feel disgruntled.
Throughout the summer, Brown has never publicly addressed not making the Team USA roster. Instead, he has been training. Recently, Brown has posted photos on X.com of him working out underwater. He has spoken about the Celtics and the target on their back. Now, with this comment, stating “I want blood,” it is clear that Brown and the Celtics still feel doubted despite finally getting over the hump and winning their 18th championship.
Jaylen Brown’s Response
When facing the doubt and criticism, Brown appears focused and ready. This sort of thing has fueled his play before. In the NBA Finals, Dallas Mavericks Coach Jason Kidd made comments in a press conference to try and sow dissension between Tatum and Brown. But they did not let this rattle them. Instead, they responded on the basketball court, leading the Celtics to win the series in a decisive five games.
Another instance of Brown’s response to doubt was earlier in the Celtics playoff run, when he was not named to an All-NBA Team. Brown, again, was unfazed, and focused on leading the Celtics to an NBA Championship, where he played some of the best basketball of his career. Now, after not making the Team USA roster, with everyone coming for the reigning champions, Jaylen Brown appears confident and ready to face the adversity once again.
Repeat Champions?
If the Celtics want to go back to the NBA Finals and go for banner 19, they cannot rest on their laurels. Over the offseason, the Celtics extended key players White and Sam Hauser, while bringing in Lonnie Walker IV on a one-year deal. But these moves and extensions will not mean a thing if the Celtics think they can walk their way back to a championship. Brown’s comment of “I want blood” shows that he is still focused and locked in. It is the mentality needed from the Boston Celtics if they want to defend their title against other surging contenders in the East and West.
Final Thoughts
Jaylen Brown is confident and ready to take on all comers in the 2024-25 season. We will see if the underwater workouts and bold comments translate to the basketball court, and he leads the Boston Celtics to more success.
