Breaking Down The Boston Celtics 2024 Training Camp Roster

On Tuesday, September 24th, the Boston Celtics officially released their training camp roster of 21 players. The roster, of course, featured the many returning players from the 2023-24 championship roster. The entire starting lineup of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, Jrue Holiday, and Kristaps Porzingis is back. Then, there are returning bench players such as Al Horford, Sam Hauser, Payton Pritchard, and others. But, more interestingly, there are many new or less utilized players looking for an opportunity. Training camp and preseason will be the time for these players to make their mark, with a shot of making the 15-man roster.

There are three rookies on the Boston Celtics training camp roster. First-round draft pick, Baylor Scheierman, second-round draft pick Anton Watson, and Tristan Enaruna, who went undrafted. The Boston Celtics drafted Baylor Scheierman with the 30th pick out of Creighton University. Scheierman is a sharpshooter and shot 38.1% from three in his final college season. With the Celtics already being one of the most three-point-reliant teams in the NBA, Scheierman is the type of player who can immediately make an impact. However, other players such as Payton Pritchard, Sam Hauser, and Lonnie Walker IV will be battling for minutes with the Creighton prospect and have much more experience.

Anton Watson enters training camp on a two-way contract with the Boston Celtics, meaning he will likely spend time in the G-League. This will be an opportunity for the Gonzaga rookie to develop and grow his game. Tristan Enaruna is not on a two-way contract but could be fighting for one. Enaruna went undrafted in 2024 after playing five years of college basketball at Kansas, Iowa State, and Cleveland State. So, training camp will be a huge chance for him to earn a roster spot, whether it is in the G-League, on the Maine Celtics, or on the Boston Celtics 15-man roster.

New Additions

The Boston Celtics have also made additions to their training camp roster by signing players in the offseason. The biggest of these signings was Lonnie Walker IV. Walker was signed to a one-year contract after previous stints with the Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers, and San Antonio Spurs. He is a proven contributor on multiple teams and can be another scoring option off the bench. Walker averaged 9.7 points per game and shot 38.4% from three this past season.

Another new signing on the training camp roster is Ron Harper Jr. Harper is entering his third NBA season, after spending two years in Toronto, mainly in the G-League. He has played a total of 10 NBA games in his career. There’s also Dmytro Skapintsev, the 7’1” Ukranian center. Skapintsev is on an Exhibit 10 contract, meaning that after training camp, the Celtics can waive him and send him down to play in the G-League. Like Harper, he has also spent most of his career in the G-League, with the Westchester Knicks.

Other Players to Watch

While training camp is an opportunity for rookies and new signings to make their mark, it is also a chance for young, less utilized players to break through. Players who didn’t get many minutes looking to break into the rotation or G-League players who want to earn a spot on the 15-man roster. Jordan Walsh and Drew Peterson are both players who spent significant time in the G-League last season. Then, there are players like Jaden Springer, JD Davison, and Neemias Queta, who got occasional minutes last season but were hardly used in the playoff rotation. For these players, training camp will serve as a proving ground.

Final Thoughts

The Boston Celtics training camp roster has been finalized and for players who are set in their roles, it is time to get back into a flow with the team. But, for rookies, new signings, or players with something to prove, training camp is a huge opportunity. These players have a chance, with possibilities that span from the Boston Celtics’ 15-man roster to the G-League, or being waived. Only time will tell where they all end up, as the Celtics dive into training camp.
