Jack Edwards is Done Calling Boston Bruins Games After This Season

Renowned play-by-play announcer Jack Edwards has announced his retirement after nearly two decades calling games with the Boston Bruins. He announced he would be stepping away from his “dream job” at the New England Sports Network (NESN) at the end of the season. He will continue calling Bruins games through the end of the 2023-24 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

His decision stems from his recent struggle with slowed speech, for which he has received therapy. In an interview with The Boston Globe in February 2024, he stated that he has yet to receive a diagnosis that details the cause of his condition and struggle.

Edwards said that “he is no longer able to attain the standards he set for himself,” which were to “honor the fans, the players, the Bruins organization, and NESN with the best they all deserve.” Nevertheless, he leaves his position with immense gratitude rather than sadness.

Edwards’ Start with the Boston Bruins

Edwards’ sports broadcasting career spans over 45 years. He began in local New England television stations before he landed a position as an anchor for SportsCenter and announcer for a wide variety of sports events at ESPN starting in 1991. Edwards began calling Boston Bruins road games at NESN during the 2005-06 season. He then transitioned to calling all games two years later at the start of the 2007-08 season. He received a Stanley Cup Championship ring in 2011 for his work after the Boston Bruins won the cup that season.

Following the announcement of his retirement, NESN will begin to conduct a nationwide search for the next play-by-play voice to sit in the booth alongside color commentator Andy Brickley.
